Position Summary
The Radiation Safety and Compliance Associate 1 ( RSCA) resides within the Office of Research Safety ( ORS). ORS consists of cross-disciplinary EH&S professions with a primary focus in chemical/ laboratory safety, radiation/ laser safety, and emergency response. This position involves Right to Know knowledge, Personal Protective Equipment use, basic knowledge of radiation safety and compliance, and hands-on tasks. The position reports to the Senior Radiation Safety and Compliance Officer ( RSO) and requires adherence to supervisor-prescribed protocols dealing with instrumentation calibration; sampling, handling, transporting, and storage of radioactive materials.
The RSCA will maintain a high degree of professionalism and integrity in representing the University and model a culture of safety. The RSCA does not have employee direct reports and does not participate in the After-Hours/Holiday On-Call program but has a supportive role within assigned ORS programs and emergency spill response teams.

  • Knowledge of State and Federal environmental health and safety regulations as well as nationally accepted standards, guidelines, and other related conventions on safety and compliance
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously, due to the diversity of safety and compliance services, and the wide range of potential work locations on campus

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Receive, process, and deliver all radioactive materials arriving at the Radiation Safety Laboratory in accordance with the Radiation Safety Manual and standard operating procedures.
  • Receiving and processing packages including evaluating container integrity, ensuring accurate contents based on purchase orders, surveying and analyzing for radioactive contamination, and generating inventory documentation.
  • Transport packages in UGA vehicles designated for that purpose and deliver promptly to authorized personnel and approved locations.
  • Packages will be transported and handled in accordance with all regulatory requirements for transportation on public roads.
  • When necessary, provide assistance with outgoing radioactive materials shipments, ensuring full compliance with all radioactive materials shipping regulations.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Coordinate pick-ups of radioactive waste with laboratory personnel.
  • Safely and properly transport waste to appropriate storage locations.
  • Maintain waste inventories and ensure all containers are properly organized and segregated.
  • Collect samples from waste containers for analysis.
  • Ensure disposal of decayed waste is completed appropriately and at specified frequencies.
  • Coordinate with ESD Hazardous Waste personnel for pick-up of non-radioactive waste.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Calibrate radiological monitoring instruments for all radioactive material users on UGA's main campus and extended campuses, ensuring that calibration methods comply with the Federal & State guidelines.
  • Keep all relevant SOPs for instrument calibrations up to date.
  • Develop and maintain a routine calibration schedule.
  • Ensure each survey meter is picked up, calibrated and returned in the same week.
  • Calibrate liquid scintillation counters (LSCs) on the designated schedule.
  • Provide basic troubleshooting of LSCs and be thoroughly familiar with instrument software.

  • Maintain the UGA vehicle used for radioactive materials transport, the Radiation Safety Lab, and radioactive waste storage facilities.
  • The vehicle and facilities are inspected daily and cleaned, organized and maintained as appropriate for the location and work tasks.
  • Radiological surveys are performed at specified frequencies.
  • Radioactive materials are kept secure from unauthorized access.
  • Any noted discrepancies or hazards are promptly brought to the attention of the RSO or designee.

  • Provide support for the sealed sources program.
  • On a bi-annual basis, distribute, collect, and analyze wipe tests for radioactive materials contamination.
  • Perform wipe tests on sealed sources as needed and instruct lab personnel on standard procedures.
  • Monitor, investigate, and document any suspected leaking sources in accordance with established protocols.
  • Communicate findings to the RSO and Radiation Safety Committee, including any required corrective actions.
