HJF is seeking a TBI SME (MID-LEVEL PROVIDER - CPCR) that helps with all aspects of patient care, including diagnosis, treatments and consultations. May work in inpatient, outpatient and research situations and performs independently or as part of a treatment team. Knowledge of TBI and statistics required. Educates patients about preventative care and prescribed treatments. Conduct physical exams, orders tests and medications, and serves as a patient's primary healthcare provider.

This position will be in support of the Traumatic Brain Injury Center of Excellence (TBICoE) in Silver Spring, MD. The TBICoE is a branch of the Research Support Division in the Research and Engineering Directorate (R&E) of the Defense Health Agency (DHA). DHA is a Federal Program within the Department of Defense (DoD). TBICoE, known previously as the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center (DVBIC), has been congressionally mandated since 1992 and is currently a matrixed research, dissemination, and knowledge translation program, supporting warfighter brain health and readiness by advancing the traumatic brain injury state of the science and clinical standards.

TBICoE's mission to support the warfighter is executed through subject matter experts embedded across DHA facilities with expertise in TBI clinical research investigations, surveillance, clinical tool development and training, cognitive monitoring and assessment, and dissemination of TBI tools, products, and education/training materials to DoD medical personnel, service members, including Guard, Reserve, and operational medics/corpsmen, veterans with TBI, and families/caregivers of the warfighter.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.

This position is contingent upon contract award.



  • Knowledgeable and proficient with the content of protocols. Identifies problems in the research design or analysis methodology and trends in patient reactions to treatment. Collects, organizes, catalogs, disseminates, and maintains appropriate files of current data.
  • Assists in the development of research question, design and methodology. Assists in writing and/or editing, organization and management of protocols. Supports protocols at Institutional Review Boards (IRB).
  • Educates patients and their families on research protocol, purpose of the research, procedures, patient responsibilities, answers questions, and discusses risks and benefits of participation. Explains and obtains Informed Consent.
  • Develops reports and presents clinical results at local and national meetings and assist in the preparation of research articles for publication in scientific journals.
  • Provides patient care including: screening, evaluating and monitoring patients. Prepares patients for office visits and invasive procedures and assists in the implementation of these procedures. Evaluates the effectiveness of pain management for individual patients and recommends changes in acute pain management.
  • Provides assistance, consultation, assessment and monitoring of patients participating in or being evaluated for enrollment in project studies for actual and/or potential health problems.
  • Performs examinations and screenings on participating patients and maintains records of results. Prescribes appropriate therapies within the limits established by the protocol.
  • Obtains information from patients and their family/caregivers to gather appropriate data including present and past medical history and physical assessment, to be utilized for patient care and documentation for database entry. Provides patient/family counseling and education.
  • Assists with the management of patient specialty clinics which may include clinic set up, booking appointments, returning phone calls and handing out appropriate program information and questionnaires.
  • Provides feedback to PI to monitor the quality of patient care and issues that affect protocol adherence and program operations.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.


Education and Experience



  • Nurse practitioner or Physician Assistant degree with license required.
  • 5-10 years of experience in healthcare and healthcare research required.
  • Experience with TBI, prior experience with DoD/VA systems strongly preferred.
  • Required Licenses: NP or PA with state license, Board certification preferred.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • SMEs are professional personnel who have published in peer reviewed publications, conducted presentations at professional meetings, and are considered experts in their given field.
  • Excellent oral and written communications required.
  • Must have strong collaborative and organizational skills.
  • Must adhere to legal, professional and ethical codes with respect to confidentiality and privacy.
  • Experience in Fundamental, Basic, Applied, or Mixed Research preferred.
  • Knowledge of TBI and statistics required.
  • Knowledge of DoD and VA health care systems strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of procedures and techniques necessary for performing clinical responsibilities related to research protocols.

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods


Licenses and Certifications



  • Nurse Practitioner License


Work Environment



  • This position will take place primarily in an office setting.


Compensation



  • The annual salary range for this position is $100,500-$186,600. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
