Job Summary |
The Alabama Prison Arts + Education Project is looking for a Community Education Coordinator (
CEC) to facilitate educational and art programming at state correctional facilities. The
CEC works closely with
APAEP staff to create spaces for learning and creativity for students across Alabama. This full-time position assists in program development, provides instructor and student support, ensures
APAEP policies and protocols are kept by those under their supervision, maintains professional relationships with community partners, and keeps diligent records. A successful candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, adheres to strict deadlines, adaptable, passionate, and works well in strictly regimented environments. Administrative experience managing multiple lines of communication and complex record-keeping systems is key. System-impacted candidates are encouraged to apply. This position is based in Birmingham, AL. The work involves regular travel and atypical work hours. |
Essential Functions |
- Identifying and recruiting teachers, as well as providing training in APAEP policies
- Providing administrative oversight of APAEP classes
- Communicating and coordinating with ADOC officials
- Traveling frequently to/from correctional facilities across Alabama
- Maintaining confidential print and digital records
- Promoting APAEP through outreach and social media
- Coordinating recurring art projects such as the APAEP anthology and art exhibit
- Assisting with grant writing
- Identifying areas for growth and development of programs.
- Assisting with other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications |
Level I: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
Level II: Bachelor's degree in discipline appropriate to position plus 2 years experience. Experience must include at least 2 years at the preceding level or equivalent.
Level III: Bachelor's degree in discipline appropriate to position plus 4 years experience. Experience must include at least 2 years at the preceding level or equivalent.
Substitutions allowed for Education: Indicated education is required; no substitutions allowed.
Substitutions allowed for Experience: When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience. |
