Position Summary
The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition.

The Museum's Learning Labs are public-facing education spaces, which provide visitors with engaging, hands-on experiences in natural history through access to Museum collections and facilitated learning experiences, at no cost. The Discovery Room is a family-friendly space that offers an introduction to the Museum's science and a gateway to its exhibition galleries.
The Education team is seeking a part-time Educator, Discovery Room Lead Facilitator to provide the highest level of facilitated experiences for families and visitors to the Museum's Discovery Room. This includes supporting volunteer facilitators in their experiences in the room and monitoring visitation throughout the day. The Educator will maintain a standard schedule of three days per week, sometimes including both weekend days, and will spend most of their time working directly with visitors in the Discovery Room.

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead facilitated experiences for the general public as they explore the Discovery Room and its activities.
  • Model exemplary facilitation practice for teaching assistants, MEEP interns and volunteers assigned to the exhibit and provide coaching and feedback during their shifts.
  • Maintain visitation and evaluation data for the Discovery Room and serve as a first line of contact with visitors to address customer service concerns.
  • Develop, in collaboration with the Learning Labs team, enhanced activities and displays that mirror new approaches to cultural storytelling and scientific content on display across the Museum.
  • Mentor interns as they develop and pilot test new Discovery Room activities as part of their internship exit projects.
  • Support the maintenance of Discovery Room exhibits and scientific equipment. Prep consumable materials for use in the exhibit.
  • Manage communications with the Learning Labs team on maintenance needs and staffing concerns within the Discovery Room.
  • Maintain availability to work weekends.


The expected salary for the Educator, Discovery Room Lead Facilitator is $38.54/hour. This position is overtime-eligible.

Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Some college-level coursework in a natural science field.
  • Two years experience teaching in a formal or informal setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in an education or natural sciences field.
  • Experience working with interns and volunteers.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for prolonged periods.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Must be able to move about the Museum campus.
  • Positioning/change of positioning: Must be able to frequently position oneself/body to accomplish job duties.

    • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling.
    • Climbing: Ascending or descending physical structures.
