Job duties and responsibilities
Post-doctoral position in Electron microscopy

A fully funded postdoctoral position in the field of advanced electron microscopy is available at the Materials Science and Engineering Department at Penn State University. The candidate will be working on a wide range of materials including beam sensitive materials, 2D materials, and oxides and will have the opportunity to interact with many groups and centers at Penn State including the center for 2DCC-MIP, MRSEC, and beyond.

This position is part of an extensive national and international team effort and the candidate will be primarily using a state-of-the-art aberration-corrected ultra-high resolution Titan3 microscope as well as the recently installed Spectra (including probe and image corrected and equipped with a monochromator) for the nanoscale characterization of beam sensitive materials using advanced imaging and spectroscopy techniques. The candidate will also have access to a wide range of in situ TEM holders (heating, electrical biasing, gas and liquid holders), as well as 4D STEM capabilities, which will open up a wide range of scientific ideas to pursue. Penn State also offers Cryo and room temperature focused ion beam, scanning electron microscopy, low temperature photoluminescence and Raman, etc. as well as the nanofabrication facility located within the Millennium Science Complex at Penn State for device fabrication.

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering, in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences is seeking a postdoctoral scholar. The final candidate will:
We are looking for a highly motivated, self-driven, collaborative, skilled young microscopist with a PhD in materials science, physics, chemistry, or a related field that has a thorough background in aberration-corrected scanning/transmission electron microscopy, advanced image analysis and programming (e.g., scripting in Digital Micrograph, Matlab/Python). This full-time position is available as early as fall 2025, for a period of one year with the option to renew subject to good performance and funding.
