Job Description Summary:
The GW Institute for Racial, Ethnic, and Socioeconomic Equity (Equity Institute) is seeking a part-time Communications Specialist to support the Equity Institute's public-facing storytelling, event promotion, and digital engagement efforts over the summer.
The GW Institute for Racial, Ethnic, and Socioeconomic Equity (Equity Institute) leverages the resources of a premier research university and invests in transformative community partnerships with the goal of eradicating racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic inequity worldwide.
As part of its growing portfolio, the Equity Institute is currently advancing three priority initiatives: (1) the Summer Institute 2026, a groundbreaking collaboration with researchers at Harvard and Drexel to train the next generation of systems modelers in public health and policy; (2) the All-In Expansion, a partnership with All-In Cincinnati to scale a national model for economic and social equity rooted in community-driven research; and (3) the Wealth Gap and Opportunity Dashboard, a place-based strategy aligning investments with economic, health, and social outcomes. These initiatives reflect EI's commitment to turning research into action through innovative partnerships and scalable solutions.
This is a great opportunity for a current university student or recent graduate who is interested in strategic communications, digital media, and social equity. The Communications Assistant will help amplify the impact of the Institute's work by creating high-quality, accessible content that elevates its mission and research priorities.
Key Responsibilities:


  • Content Development: Draft and edit copy for the website, newsletters, blog posts, and promotional materials.

  • Social Media: Support daily planning and posting across platforms including Instagram and LinkedIn; assist with content scheduling and engagement tracking.

  • Create Video Clips for Social Media: Create short, compelling, and visually engaging social media clips from existing footage that highlight the Equity Institute's mission and values, draw on historical context, point to our initiatives, and amplify the Equity Institute's leadership. These clips will be used across Instagram, LinkedIn, our newsletter, and in EI's blog series Then and Now to connect past and present policy landscapes.

  • Event Promotion: Help design and execute communications plans for upcoming events, including social media graphics, invitations, and follow-up materials.

  • Media Support: Help draft press materials and track media engagement related to Equity Institute initiatives.

  • Research & Messaging Support: Conduct background research to support key messages, storytelling efforts, and project visibility.
  • Special projects or other duties may be assigned related to specific Equity Institute needs.


Additional Details:
This is a temporary, part-time role based in Washington, DC. Must be available to work on campus at GW for the duration of the summer (June-August 2025). Ideal for current students or recent graduates looking to gain real-world experience in communications and social impact.
Required Qualifications:

  • Previous skills, training, or experience is required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience creating and editing communications content (e.g., articles, newsletters, web content, etc.).
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and content management systems.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and competing priorities in a fast-paced work environment.

Performs other duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a high school diploma/ GED plus 1.5 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant area of study. The degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in Canva and/or Adobe Express for content creation is desired.
  • Experience managing social media platforms (e.g., Instagram, LinkedIn) including post scheduling and engagement tracking is preferred.
  • Ability to research, synthesize, and communicate complex topics clearly and concisely.
  • A demonstrated interest in topics related to equity and community-driven research.
