POSITION SPECIFICS

Penn State Global is seeking a dedicated and student-centered International Student Support Adviser to join the team. This role provides critical advising and advocacy for international students, helping them navigate academic, cultural, and immigration-related challenges in support of their personal growth, well-being, and overall success at Penn State.

The adviser supports the success of Penn State's international student population by providing advising on immigration regulations, academic matters, and cultural or personal concerns. The position serves as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO), maintaining compliance through the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). Also, this role ensures accurate student record management and collaborates with colleagues across Penn State Global to advance the unit's mission of fostering global engagement and student success.

Duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide holistic advising to international students on a wide range of topics, including immigration regulations, academic concerns, and financial, social, cultural, and personal matters, with the goal of supporting their success and well-being at Penn State
  • Assess and determine eligibility for immigration-related requests such as visa status changes, family support, program extensions, Curricular Practical Training (CPT), Optional Practical Training (OPT), and reduced course loads
  • Interpret and resolve complex immigration situations to help students maintain lawful status while pursuing their education in the U.S.
  • Maintain accurate and timely student records in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and other institutional systems to ensure compliance with federal regulations
  • Serve as a resource for faculty, staff, and administrators by providing guidance on institutional responsibilities related to international student compliance and success
  • Contribute to international student success by participating in, developing, and implementing programs and initiatives in partnership with Global Engagement Coordinators to advance Penn State Global goals

Who we are looking for:

  • The position does require U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency to access SEVIS

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with commitment to intercultural competencies
  • Proficient in utilizing Microsoft Office Suite and managing information system databases

The position is filled at the Advanced Professional level.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree 3+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted Required Certifications: None

BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES

This position requires the following clearances in addition to applicable background checks: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check. Penn State does not sponsor or take over sponsorship of a staff employment Visa. Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S.

SALARY & BENEFITS

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $46,400.00 - $67,300.00.
