Essential Job Functions
The North Carolina General Assembly established the University of North Carolina System Laboratory School initiative to provide enhanced educational programming to improve student performance and to plan demonstration sites to prepare future teachers and school administrators. Appalachian State University operates the App State Academy at Middle Fork.
The Exceptional Children's (EC) resource teacher will play an integral role in developing a robust academic program for students in the general education classroom or special education classroom setting. They will be focused on improving student outcomes by building capacity to integrate best practices in teaching, learning, and assessment.
The Academy at Middle Fork has an innovative, team-based teaching model that promotes co-teaching. The EC resource teacher will be critical in helping to facilitate this collaborative approach.
Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Model and meet the expectations of the Portrait of a Lab School Team Member.
  • Use restorative practices to address learning and behavior needs
  • Implement co-planning, co-teaching, co-assessment, and co-reflection practices with general education teachers
  • Implement Individualized Educational Program (IEP) plans for students, including present levels of educational performance, special education needs, instructional goals and objectives, and the special education and related services required to meet those goals
  • Provide research-based specialized instruction to address the instructional goals and objectives contained within each student's IEP
  • Assess the progress of students and use data to inform teaching strategies
  • Interpret diagnostic information obtained from tests and other assessment procedures to update IEPs as needed
  • Evaluate and assess student progress against instructional objectives
  • Employ various teaching techniques, methods, and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals
  • Deliver instruction using appropriate accommodations and modifications
  • Follow state-mandated due process procedures and functions
  • Collaborate and plan regularly with general education teachers to ensure students are receiving appropriate classroom accommodations and to help teachers understand student IEPs
  • Fully understand and follow expectations set forth by the staff handbook
  • Engage in opportunities for enhanced professional development to stay current in innovative teaching practices affecting the whole child
  • Respect the confidentiality of records and information regarding students, families, and teachers in accordance with accepted professional ethics and state and federal laws
  • Comply with state and federal education statutes, including the NC Code of Ethics for Educators
  • Adhere to the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards
  • Other duties as assigned

Preferred Qualifications
Hold or be eligible for a NC teaching license in special education
Master's degree
3+ years of successful teaching experience
National Board Certification

Hiring Range $40.00
Pay will be commensurate with applicant competencies, budget, equity and market considerations.
