HDR is a Top 10 Architectural & Engineering (A&E) firm in the United States as ranked by Engineering News Record and is also one of the largest employee-owned A&E companies in the United States. HDR has been selected to run the Installation Engineering and Installation Management functions of the Civil Engineer Squadron for the United Stated Air Force Academy (USAFA). As such, we will be placing a multi-disciplinary A&E team of 50+ professionals at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. The contract is expected to begin in early 2026 and covers an eight-year period from 2026 through 2034. The U.S. Air Force Academy is one of the premier universities in our country and is one of the most widely visited locations in all of Colorado. The Air Force Academy has a rich history and a unique mission to educate and train future Air Force leaders. HDR is honored to be selected for these components of the of the Base Maintenance Contract (BMC) in conjunction with Tessera, who will be running and leading the master contract with the Air Force. HDR will be performing wide-ranging facility management services to include but not limited to: planning, programming, design, asset management, construction inspection, energy management, real estate, environmental, cultural resources, space planning, CAD, GIS, cost estimating, and numerous other functions. Ideal candidates will have knowledge and/or experience with federal contracts and/or the Air Force Civil Engineering Squadron. They will also have a strong enthusiasm to ensure the cadets and future Air Force Leaders live and learn in state-of-the-art facilities and have the necessary resources to serve our country to the best of their abilities. This position is full time and located on-site at the USAFA. The expected start date is March 1, 2026. In the role of Senior Project Architect, we'll count on you to:
- Lead a multi discipline team and perform layout and detailing on architectural projects.
- Independently coordinate work of a multi discipline team through multiple phases of a project.
- Establish owner/client and internal meetings and participate in reviews with various governing agencies for code compliance.
- Review architectural documents for areas of conflict with all disciplines.
- Perform QA/QC and technical reviews.
- Write and edit architectural specifications.
- Coordinate with and assist affected disciplines with addenda, RFIs, CPRs and change orders.
- Lead projects in a dual management role as needed.
- Provide construction contract administration as needed.
- Be the Architectural subject matter expert (SME); apply the latest trends and state-of-the-art technologies in facility design, construction, alterations, space management and knowledge management to ensure that capital development projects meet the current and future requirements of clients.
- Perform repair and alteration building inspections.
- Prepare detailed construction contract documents including designs, working drawings, specifications, statements of work and rough order of magnitude (ROM) cost estimates.
- Provide leadership and direction to a wide range of representatives from within and outside the Civil Engineer Directorate during the development and management of projects. Lead the analysis to determine client facility needs, and identify key technical personnel to work on various aspects of projects.
- Work with stakeholders and key leadership in various Department of Defense agencies, State and local governments, zoning and planning commissions and others to identify strategic objectives, goals and long-range plans for capital development.
- Negotiates contract specifications and design changes with organizational elements of the agency and contractors.
- Participate in reviews of bids, contractors' negotiations and technical and business discussions with contractors.
- Monitor and assess effectiveness of contractors in meeting contractual requirements.
- Prepare in-house design packages for contract, including but not limited to, drawings, specifications, independent government estimates for vertical projects.
- Oversee third party A-E preparation of plans, specifications, and cost estimates; review internal or externally produced design drawings, specifications and submittals for conformance to functional, operational, and maintenance requirements.
- Provide guidance and technical direction to lower graded architects, engineering technicians, space managers, management analysts and project managers.
- Perform other duties as needed
Preferred Qualifications
Prior Air Force Civil Engineering Squadron experience preferred
- Ability to work in person and on site at United States Air Force Academy
- Ability to pass a background check
- Master's degree in Architecture
- Experience and/or interest in sustainable design/LEED desired
- Knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, SketchUp
- 7+ years commercial (non-residential) experience
- Knowledge of design for Department of Defense facilities
- Knowledge of the Internal Building Code, NFPA Life Safety Code, ASCE 7, AISC Standards, and Unified Facilities Criteria.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Completion of the following AFIT training courses: *WENG 400, *WENG 519, *WMGT 322, *WMGT 422, *WTSS 200
- Due to client contract requirements, US Citizenship - US Naturalized citizen is required

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Architecture or closely related field
- A minimum of 10 years experience
- Registered Architect
- Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Project Schedule)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Proficient in use of Autodesk Revit and familiarity with related tools and process
- Demonstrated graphic presentation skills
- Must have experience in preparation and layout of architectural contract documents and specifications
- Strong knowledge of codes and good planning skills
