Position Summary
The NGE Assistant Editor reports to the NGE Managing Editor and contributes to the day-to-day operation of the New Georgia Encyclopedia ( NGE). Duties include managing the development of content by working closely with writers and editors to produce authoritative peer-reviewed scholarship; revising existing entries to ensure they are accurate, up-to-date, and reflect recent scholarly literature; developing strategies for improving project's usefulness for target audiences, including students, educators, and the general public; maintaining editorial schedules; and ensuring consistency of tone and style throughout the NGE.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Knowledge of the publishing process and current technologies, especially editorial/production.
  • Proven research and writing skills
  • Familiarity with standard editorial usage and style manuals.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to work independently
  • Competence with Photoshop, Google documents, and various social media platforms.
  • Familiarity with WordPress or other content management system and SEO best practices
  • Familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Knowledge of Georgia history and culture.
  • Familiarity with recent trends in the digital humanities
  • Demonstrated copyediting and proofreading skills (test may be required)

Duties/Responsibilities
Acquires, reviews, and edits new entries and submissions (both text and multimedia) by corresponding with authors and preparing and editing copy to improve readability. Responds to user comments, verifying facts, dates, and statistics, and updating entries. Cultivates diverse representation for existing and new content by monitoring site coverage and participating in regular reviews of the publication's stylebook and editorial policies. Contributes original content for publication in the Encyclopedia and ancillary materials.
