HDR is currently seeking a Data Center Power Delivery Leader who has an interest in expanding their career across multiple market sectors, business units, and areas of technical expertise across the US. Having previously performed leadership roles on increasingly complex substation projects, you'll be ready to undertake greater challenges and responsibilities.


This position is a key role for our global growth, supporting program management, project management, technical leadership and oversight of substation design projects, team growth, and supporting client relationships and business development activities for a diverse set of technology, data center, and other mission critical projects and clients across the country.


This position will primarily collaborate with, leverage, and grow HDR substation design teams across the company to develop, scope, and deliver design-bid-build and/or design-build data center substation design projects for various data center clients across the globe. This position will also engage in business development activities to support existing and new mission critical clients.


This position may also perform early-stage site and power due diligence and planning studies and develop solutions that meet regional regulatory requirements for all aspects of power delivery design of high voltage electrical switching stations and substations with distribution and transmission line, renewable energy, business continuity, and resiliency components for mission critical projects and clients.


Specific duties include:



  • Grows Power delivery business for mission critical clients, including participation in business planning, client development, resource management, design delivery, and quality management.
  • Collaborates with program management, marketing and client development leaders to build on existing client relationships with mission critical clients, with a focus on power delivery (substations, distribution, transmission interconnect, renewable energy, business continuity, and resiliency).
  • Oversees a program team consisting of multiple project managers and teams to deliver results to single or multiple clients. Implements program-wide solutions that drive efficiency, improves quality and reduces risks collectively.
  • Develop a local substation design team as part of the broader program team focused on data center projects.
  • Manages projects and programs, including scope and/or proposal development, project team development and assignment, project execution, quality reviews, project closeout, and quality control, schedule, and budget management.
  • Utilizes knowledge of and experience with a variety of utility frameworks, design standards, utility interconnect processes, and preferred project delivery models across the US to develop and scope new project opportunities.
  • Utilizes experience with power delivery procurement and construction industry best practices in the US, with traditional and alternative delivery models (EPC, EPCM, Progressive DB, etc.) to bring innovative solutions to scoping and executing projects.
  • Collaborates with HDR operations leaders, project managers, and project teams to leverage staff for engineering execution to deliver world class quality in design and construction support of projects in the US and internationally.
  • Can lead site and power due diligence studies to evaluate regional electricity infrastructure, energy markets, and relevant regulatory and policy environments and develop and present findings to clients.
  • Develop relationships and agreements with teaming partners, as required, to support regulatory approvals and/or other requirements of projects.
  • Mentors junior project managers and engineers to continue to develop future talent.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Professional Engineer licensure or PMP in lieu of PE.
  • Minimum 10 years of general high voltage substation design experience, including prior design, project and/or program management experience.
  • Substation design experience up to 500kV.
  • Power Delivery experience with large scale private developers (i.e. renewables, industrial sites, data centers, etc.) and a variety of US utilities (i.e. investor-owned utilities, public utility districts, municipalities, cooperatives) preferred.
  • Technical experience with data center substation projects of small to medium size and complexity up to 230kV (higher voltages a plus), including conceptual knowledge of physical, electrical, civil, and structural design components, and knowledge of IEEE, NESC, NEC and ANSI design and equipment standards.
  • Experience with the utility interconnection process from load application through engineering and construction agreements.
  • Strong leadership skills and experience managing multiple national remote teams.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a Professional, Architecture, Engineering or closely related field
  • A minimum of 10 years project management experience working with external clients
  • Understanding of HDR business services and procedures
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with interview (fact-finding) experience
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
