Job Description

The City of Renton's Recreation Division is seeking a friendly, organized, and energetic Recreation Assistant to join our Parks & Recreation Department. The Recreation Assistant provides outstanding customer service and support for our recreation programs and facilities. In this dynamic role, you'll serve as the first point of contact for patrons, assist with program administration, prepare facilities and equipment for daily use, and help keep operations running smoothly. SCHEDULE:

This position is scheduled to work Tuesday-Saturday, 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. Flexibility is required, as the role may occasionally require working early mornings, evenings, weekends, or holidays depending on program and facility needs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide front line customer service assistance to the general public, City personnel, and outside agencies by email, phone, or in-person regarding fees, payments, facility rules & operations and other issues.
  • Prepare facilities for daily use; ensure proper equipment is available for classes and events; perform set up of a variety of athletic and/or electronic equipment; close facilities as needed.
  • Perform a variety of administrative tasks in support of recreation programs; receive registrations, document cancellations; maintain waiting lists for programs, activities, and classes as needed.
  • Schedule facility uses for classes, activities, programs, and special events; process rental applications, collect fees and deposits and maintain building calendar to ensure that necessary staff and equipment are available for users.
  • Maintain client accounts; set up new accounts and update information through online portal or in person request; update account balances and contact clients regarding overdue accounts; assist other staff with client account questions.
  • Assist Recreation Systems Technician with maintaining the Recreation Program software; provide training and on-going assistance to staff users.
  • Transport participants to and from program activities as needed; provide support to staff and participants at events and field trips.
  • Reconcile receipts for fees received and prepare daily bank deposit for assigned facility; balance daily ledger to GL and upload to Finance; research any discrepancies.
  • Assist Program Coordinators with keeping participants safe, happy, and actively involved in programs; enforce rules, regulations and safety precautions; provide assistance to those in need; instruct programs as needed.
  • Develop and conduct surveys regarding recreations program and facilities; make recommendations on revisions to existing program and facilities.
  • Process refunds, send request for payments, enter invoices for Accounts Payable and research transaction errors.
  • Collect and maintain statistical information including program attendance, team scores, and participant characteristic data.
  • May train, schedule, and assign duties of seasonal personnel.
  • Contribute to an environment of teamwork and respect.
  • Foster a culture of equity and inclusion by recognizing the diverse needs and perspectives of groups and individuals.
  • Remain current with relevant technological advancements as it relates to field.
  • Participate in and help provide cross-training in processes as directed by management to ensure a well-rounded team for coverage purposes.
  • Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • May be assigned to support City priorities during emergencies.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum 2 years of customer service experience.
  • Or 2 years of relevant education and experience.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • First Aid Certificate and CPR Certificate within 6 months of hire
  • Successful passing of a required background check
  • Successful passing of required drivers record check

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Drive to offsite locations to perform essential functions.
  • Move throughout City facilities and buildings.
  • Operate a computer and other office equipment.
  • Communicate with City employees and residents.
  • Lift or move items weighing up to 50 pounds (occasionally)
  • Lift heavy objects in awkward and confined spaces, using proper lifting and rigging techniques.
  • Climb and work from ladders, climb stairs.
  • Bending, stretching, and standing for extended periods.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Work is performed in an office environment (and outdoors in all weather conditions occasionally).
  • Exposure to hazardous materials, heights, and noise from equipment.
  • Noise level out in the field is moderately loud.
  • Noise level in the office is moderately quiet.
  • Work evening and/or weekend hours as needed.
  • Night meetings may be required.
