Department Information

The Office of Research Operations and Infrastructure (OROI) facilitates and supports research across campus and is responsible for a variety of principal investigator (PI)-facing activities within the research enterprise, including internally-funded research programs. OROI oversees research space, core facilities, research computing and data, and contributes to policies related to research administration and operations.

Job Summary

Serve as a member of leadership teams for the Vice President of Research Development and Operations. Responsible for working with schools, colleges, interdisciplinary research institutes (IRIs), and other relevant campus units for strategic and capital planning, policy development/oversight, and coordination for academic and research facilities across campus. Support academic and research sustainability that integrates facilities, resources, and stakeholders at all levels of the institution to support Georgia Tech's goal of cutting-edge discovery, innovation, and scholarship. Collaborate with schools and campus units in establishing and implementing priorities for existing institutional resources to ensure the highest and best use for existing facilities, space allocation/reallocation, design/construction/renovation of new and existing academic and research facilities, and the purchase and installation of major scientific equipment. This position will interact on a regular basis with: Executive Leadership, academic and research unit leadership, faculty, and staff. This position typically will advise and counsel: Executive Leadership, academic and research unit leadership faculty, and staff. This position will supervise: N/A.

Responsibilities

Job Duty 1 -
Propose and implement policies for space allocation and re-allocation for Provost and Executive Vice President for Research (EVPR) units, including colleges and IRIs. Negotiate with chairs/deans/executive directors and their respective facility directors to ensure the strategic directives of the departments are met.

Job Duty 2 -
Oversee and manage research and academic space allocation/reallocation through the Portfolio Planning Process with Capital Planning and Space Management (CPSM); serve as the lead individual for both the Provost and EVPR units on how space is allocated in an equitable and consistent manner.

Job Duty 3 -
Represent the Provost and EVPR to advocate for capital projects, collaborate in planning for enrollment and research growth, and coordinate complex maintenance and improvement requests. Work with Infrastructure and Sustainability, Real Estate, CPSM, and Budget, the Campus Master Plan process, and other relevant groups and committees.

Job Duty 4 -
Review and make recommendations to leadership on requests from schools, colleges, and IRIs for new construction and renovations to meet the needs of the research and academic community. This includes planning for the appropriate laboratory needs that accompany growth and strategic hiring.

Job Duty 5 -
Assess the strategic need, negotiate requests, and coordinate central funding for building/renovation projects and major equipment purchases. Identify, negotiate, and resolve complex research and academic space and infrastructure decisions that require leadership engagement.

Job Duty 6 -
Develop best practices with the schools/colleges for space analysis, planning, and monitoring, in collaboration with CPSM. Serve as a resource and advocate for unit and college-level facilities directors.

Job Duty 7 -
Coordinate with units and stakeholders, as needed, on projects funded by the EVPR and/or Provost offices. Cultivate a culture of transparency and collaboration with campus stakeholders regarding space utilization and allocation/reallocation decisions; develop, implement, and maintain related policies and procedures. Serve as the conduit for stakeholders to determine'what space data is needed; and serve as the Data Steward for research and academic space data.

Job Duty 8 -
In collaboration with financial staff, use financial forecasting tools to inform strategic investments in building and/or renovation projects and capital equipment purchases including the development of metrics to gauge and report overall impact of investments.

Job Duty 9 -
Support Principal Investigators (PIs) and administrators in pursuing competitive grants and philanthropy in support of infrastructure and facilities.

Job Duty 10 -
Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Building Construction, Engineering, Finance, Business, or related field.

Required Experience
Five to seven years of job-related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Educational Qualifications
Master's degree in Building Construction, Engineering, Finance, Business, or related field.

Preferred Experience
Seven to ten years of job-related experience; prior experience working with higher education and/or a research organization.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

ABILITIES
Strong written and oral communication skills. Proven ability to build consensus with leaders across a multifaceted organization.

SKILLS
Experience in planning and execution of design and construction projects from a technical as well as financial and project management perspective with emphasis on renovations of various size.
