About the Position

This attorney will join a dedicated team of attorneys and paralegals to review requests from the public and media for criminal case records and other records maintained by the County Attorney's Office. In this position, you will: provide advice regarding legal standards for the release of information to the public and media; apply case law and statutes pertaining to the public access to records and to privacy and confidentiality issues; oversee paralegals and support specialists to determine what documents may be released; answer legal questions from internal clients; and work collaboratively with as part of a public records team; and assist in the assessment of records management and technology to continually improve the service and success of the work group. This attorney will also participate in regulatory investigations and litigation and perform other duties, as assigned.

This attorney will join the Civil Services Division of the Maricopa County Attorney's Office in the Appeals, Regulatory Litigation, and Capital Public Records Group.

The ideal candidate will have experience in either criminal law or civil law; an interest in criminal cases and civil public records law; experience managing their workload; excellent communication skills; and an ability to work dependently.

The Civil Services Division of the Maricopa County Attorney's Office serves as a full-service law firm that provides legal representation and advice to the County government, its various elected officials and agencies, as well as the dedicated employees of Maricopa County. Our attorneys handle matters such as tax appeals by County taxpayers, environmental enforcement cases, and public records requests, and we defend legal actions, lawsuits, and claims brought against the County. We Require

  • Juris Doctorate (Professional) degree from an ABA-accredited law school

  • Successful candidates must be admitted to practice law and be in good standing with the State Bar of Arizona at the time of application

  • Recent writing sample

Job Contributions

  • Perform complex legal work and analysis as it pertains to records maintained by the office

  • Conduct research and analyze legal issues using both computerized legal research and hard copy tools

  • Handle review of criminal case files and non-criminal files

  • Direct the work of paralegals and support specialists regarding the review of records

  • May occasionally attend evidentiary hearings and other hearings as set by the court to present and defend the client at status conferences and oral arguments on motions.

  • Performing regulatory investigations and litigation

  • Responsible for compliance with the continuing legal education requirements and other requirements imposed by the State Bar of Arizona

Working Conditions

  • Teleworking is available after a probationary period at the discretion of management and the needs of the office

  • Office and courtroom settings

  • May require extended periods of sitting while completing paperwork, standing, and moving about while performing duties

  • Ability to travel to and from various county locations for court appearances, meetings, and training, utilizing personal or county-owned vehicles

  • Ability to move up to 20 pounds
