Summary: Assists the Medical Technologists and Technicians in a variety of pre-analytical, analytical, and post analytical procedures. Primary duties include monitoring the pneumatic tube system and other established routes of specimen entry into the laboratory. Processing and distributing specimens to various departments, performing clerical duties by entering physician orders into the LIS system, prioritizing, and combining orders appropriately, and answering telephones. Operates, monitors, and maintains basic laboratory equipment. Assists in centrifugation of specimens, loading samples for analysis, performing manual testing, documentation of critical values, issuing blood products, urine culture setups, inventory management, and stocking as well as maintaining a safe and clean work environment. Responsibilities: 1.Demonstrates computer skills necessary for collection lists, verifying a specimen's status, receiving specimens into the Lab, generating labels for the specimens, accessing patient results, entering physician orders and evaluation of duplicate requests. *Demonstrates a strong working knowledge of collection and unreceived lists. Receives specimens. Specimens are delivered to the appropriate section. Centrifuges and places correct specimens on automated or manual equipment. Can enter physician orders accurately as well as evaluate duplicate test orders and cancel or combine blood draws for minimal draws for the patient. 2.Patient procedures are performed according to procedure manual. Proper safety and identification procedures are followed when dealing with patients under any circumstances and environment. *Specimens are correctly accessioned and accurately labeled. 3.Assures accurate and timely reporting of all results obtained through performance of laboratory testing procedures. Accountable for quantity and quality of work performed. a.Is a self-starter who needs no reminders of duties and tasks that need to be completed. b.Strives to be an effective member of the Laboratory Staff. c.Performs automated and manual testing under the supervision of technologist. d.Participates in competency assessment. *Procedures are performed as indicated in procedure manual. Tests are performed without error and resulted within appropriate time frame. Problems with specimens, test results or instrumentation is reported immediately to a technologist. Acceptable competency assessment. Completes work and recognizes other duties that need to be performed. Establishes a good rapport with patients, nursing and physicians. 4.Staffs tube station. Responds to telephone and personal inquiries. *Utilizes the computer to order, cancel, and credit tests. Actively responds to the tube station. Inquiries are handled in an appropriate manner. 5.Participates in staff meetings. *Information from written documents and communications are reviewed, retained, and appropriately applies. 6.Contributes to the smooth and efficient operation of the department by: a.Recognizing and performing duties in an efficient and accurate manner. b.Demonstrates professional judgement and problem-solving skills. c.Uses a knowledge base of specimen collection and acceptability requirements. d.Demonstrates the ability to recognize a problem beyond their control and seeks guidance and oversight from charge tech. e.Maintains a safe and clean work environment. *Performs duties and interacts with coworkers to provide continuous coverage for the tube system and other departments. Employee contributes to overall section productivity. Employee demonstrates ability to handle multiple tasks at one time. Employee maintains a well-stocked, safe, and clean environment. Employee covers assigned work area; answers the phone. Employee follows through on requests promptly. Schedule is adjusted to meet workload and the needs of the department. Appointments are scheduled on days off when possible. 7.Customer service focused. Communicates with a friendly and helpful manner. Exhibits a positive attitude and commitment to the organization. *Answers telephone with courtesy, accuracy, and respect for confidentiality. Identifies ways to improve customer service. EXPERIENCE Experience in a hospital setting or high patient volume clinical setting. In lieu of experience, a candidate who has completed a phlebotomy program or at least 3 months of a CLS program may be considered.
