Minimum Experience/Education

  • 3-5 years of expert-level experience building in Canvas (design, navigation, modular structuring).
  • Demonstrated experience designing online instructional content with a pedagogical foundation.
  • Portfolio or work samples showing previously built, interactive online learning experiences.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to synthesize complex content into logical, accessible formats.

Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:

  • Experience with DesignPlus/DesignTools for Canvas.
  • Familiarity with Articulate 360 tools (Storyline, Rise) or Adobe Captivate.
  • Experience integrating simulations and third-party content (e.g., Coursera, Forage) into LMS courses.
  • Background in career development, recruitment, or workforce readiness.
  • Understanding of instructional design best practices and adult learning theory.
  • Familiarity with 21st Century Career Skills frameworks or similar competency models.

Duties and Responsibilities
The Career Center at UNC Charlotte is seeking a highly skilled Instructional Designer for a part-time, temporary position to develop three modular, online learning programs supporting students, faculty, and staff. The role requires expert-level Canvas design experience and the ability to creatively organize and deliver content that supports professional and career development.


Key Responsibilities

  • Design and build interactive learning modules in Canvas (4-6 per project), using consistent formatting, navigability, and engagement techniques.
  • Develop modules with a mix of video, simulation, reflection prompts, quizzes, and document submission functions.
  • Integrate third-party content from platforms such as EAB's Forage and Coursera Career Academy into learning experiences.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to organize and translate content into clear learning outcomes, interactive practices, and scaffolded assessments.
  • Build training pathways that support auto-grading, certificate issuance, and final human-graded assignments (as applicable).
  • Ensure accessibility, design consistency, and mobile usability across all modules.

  1. Career Skills Readiness Course - Student-facing course focused on preparing students for experiential learning or campus employment.

  2. Career Consultant Training Program - Faculty/staff training on supporting student career development.
  3. Career Skills Integration Program - Faculty-facing modules guiding integration of career competencies into course design.
