What Your Job Will Be Like:

Intern, R&D Graduate Year Round - Storage & Transportation Tech, NM, Remote

The Nuclear Energy Fuel Cycle program area is seeking a dedicated Intern Year Round - R&D Grad student to join our multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers who are passionate about their work. You will be conducting innovative research in applied AI and machine learning for safeguards and security of nuclear fuel cycle facilities. This work entails utilizing a wide range of skills including modeling and simulation, data science, and machine learning. The ideal candidate would be willing to learn the skills and background needed to complete tasks in the Mechanical Engineering and Nuclear Engineering work space.

On any given day, you may be called on to:



  • Work remotely in a dynamic work environment

  • Implement and/or apply state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms;

  • Find and present on the applicability of trending research areas;

  • Contribute to the development of modeling and simulation tools;

  • Independently triage various types of errors (software bugs, modeling errors, design errors, etc.)



Salary Range:

Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. Qualifications We Require:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:



  • Earned bachelor's degree

  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0

  • Ability to work up to 30 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer

  • Ability to secure and maintatin a U.S. security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship



Qualifications We Desire:



  • Currently pursuing a graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.

  • Classwork, research experience, or personal projects related to nuclear fuel cycle or applied AI;

  • Experience with programming tools;

  • Excellent communication skills and a demonstrated ability to clearly communicate ideas and present them in oral and written form;

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as part of a larger team;

The Storage and Transportation Technologies Department conducts R&D to support the development of the technical basis for the extended storage and transportation of commercial used nuclear fuel, and safeguards and security modeling and simulation for facilities throughout the nuclear fuel cycle. The department produces peer-reviewed research reports pertaining to many areas of used nuclear fuel storage and transportation and cutting edge analyses in safeguards and security. Our work is vital to supporting the nation's goals for enabling the continued operation of existing U.S. nuclear reactors, enabling the deployment of advanced nuclear reactors, developing advanced nuclear fuel cycles, and maintaining U.S. leadership in nuclear energy technology.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
