The Department

Sonoma State University's College of Education, Counseling, and Ethnic Studies School of Teacher Education and Leadership offers a Master of Arts in Education degree with three distinct concentrations. Each of these concentrations reflects the philosophy, purpose, and goals of the School of Teacher Education and Leadership and the College of Education, Counseling, and Ethnic Studies. In our M.A. program, students critically examine educational theories and research through a variety of empirical and theoretical lenses with a focus on social justice to develop an informed educational vision and innovative pedagogy in a variety of educational settings. Students have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty and colleagues to examine and influence current educational practice through research, project development, and advocacy. We expect graduates to emerge from their work at Sonoma State University as leaders in their fields and agents of change.

Our courses are all offered in the evenings or on weekends to support working professionals in pursuing graduate study. We also run our classes in a hybrid format, meeting in-person on campus every other week. The degree requires 33 units of study that include a culminating project.

Throughout their years in an M.A. program, students are required each semester to meet with the graduate advisor in their area of concentration to plan collaboratively their progress in the M.A. program. Students may also confer with other graduate program faculty and the Graduate Studies Coordinator for advice and guidance in their coursework and professional development. Students must maintain a 3.00 grade point average in all coursework in the approved M.A. program.

Duties of the Position

Instructor duties include:

- planning and teaching face-to-face or hybrid mode courses based on best practices and current theory and research in collaboration with tenure track faculty

- maintaining up-to-date course pages in Canvas (SSU's Learning Management System), including readings and assignments;

- responding to and addressing student concerns

- providing timely feedback related course assignments

- holding regularly scheduled office hours

- assisting struggling students as needed

-collaborating with the department chair and colleagues

Graduate courses are 3 units each for students.

Required Qualifications

To be recommended for appointment, the candidate must have:

PhD or EdD degree in Education (or related field) required; A minimum of 3 years recent experience working as a teacher or principal in public elementary school, or in teacher education at any level (preferred). Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Education or specific content area (math, science, social studies, etc.), or related fields (required). Reading Certificate, Dual-Language Certificate, ELD Certificate, bilingual authorization, or equivalent (preferred). Valid CA teaching or admin credential (preferred); Bilingual and biliterate in Spanish & English (preferred). Knowledge and experience in California School settings (preferred). Experience teaching in a graduate program in education (preferred).

Rank and Salary

Full-time is a 15-unit workload per semester. Actual salary is dependent upon the number of units assigned, educational preparation, and availability of funds subject to any CSU system faculty contract salary increases.
  • Salary commensurate with degree level and experience.
  • Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $5,507 - $6,677 per full-time month.
  • The full-time (15 units per semester) monthly base salary range indicated above is prorated to the number of units worked and are paid in six monthly payments for each full semester.
  • Selection as a candidate in the applicant pool, does not guarantee employment. Temporary Faculty appointments are made on a part-time, temporary basis and contingent upon department needs and funding.
  • Temporary Faculty appointments are made on a semester-by-semester basis.
  • Relocation expenses will not be provided for temporary faculty appointments.
  • Expenses incurred to attend an interview for temporary faculty positions are not reimbursed by the University.
