We are looking for a Principal Advisor - Strategy (Copper) to be based in our Chicago office.

As the Principal Advisor - Strategy (Copper), you will help formulate, shape and/or refine the Marketing and related investment strategies for the Copper products of current and planned operations in alignment with Copper Strategy, Group Strategy, and ESG objectives.

Join this fast-paced team that is accountable for driving the external industrial strategy of the company. Rio Tinto Commercial is committed to being the partner of choice for the Green Future and this role will support establishing the strategy to put this vision into action.

Reporting to the Manager, Strategy (Copper), you will:

  • Work with Sales, Market Analysis, Market Development, Technical Marketing and across other functional teams to monitor the market and industry for trends that provide value growth opportunities; evaluate and contribute to business cases for new Commercial opportunities and initiatives.
  • Define, syndicate and implement the Marketing strategy for Copper products by:
    • Analyzing commercial, industry, technical and financial data to support value creating business opportunities, decisions, and strategic directions, including recycling.
    • Defining product portfolios, key market and customer segments, strategic pricing and brand management activities.
    • Ensuring that prioritized business cases for investment projects critical for the Marketing strategy are delivered on time.
    • Maintaining a regular drumbeat on strategy execution with colleagues from multiple functions.
  • Provide the relevant strategic input, based on the Marketing strategy for Copper products, for:
    • Studies required to progress long-term Rio Tinto projects,
    • The development of new markets/partnerships,
    • The assessment and launch of new products,
    • The acquisition of new assets.
  • Support senior and executive management on business reporting activities and synthesis of information for communication
  • Project manage select strategic growth projects.

What you'll bring

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • A University degree in either a technical or commercial discipline
  • Experience in strategy development and the evaluation of commercial opportunities based on complex business problems, with the ability to present strategic ideas in a simple and digestible manner.
  • Analytical ability to consolidate insights from a diverse set of internal and external parties that will inform and illustrate key opportunities / threats.
  • Ability to effectively navigate ambiguity and change context to develop workable and sustainable solutions.
  • Influencing skills with the ability to translate strategic and technical content into actionable insights.
  • Project management and change management experience, particularly in a matrix organization; stakeholder engagement and business partnering skills key requisites.
  • Competencies in collaboration, listening, ability to receive and provide feedback in a positive manner and embodiment of RT behaviors will be required.
  • Ability to travel approx. 10% of the time

It will also be beneficial if you have:

  • Experience in copper industry or commodities / mining
  • Prior experience in management or strategy consulting
