Description

Position Summary:

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer with hands-on experience in HVAC and plumbing system design and recommissioning for federal and institutional facilities. This role provides technical leadership across the design lifecycle, including performance diagnostics, load assessments, and construction documentation.

This position is ideal for a mechanical engineering professional with 3+ years of experience, capable of supporting new system designs as well as improving efficiencies and longevity of existing mechanical infrastructure through field assessments and recommissioning efforts.

Position Type: Remote - Work from home with project-based travel to client sites nationwide. Ideal candidates will be in the CD-DMV area.

Essential Functions:

  • Develop designs for HVAC and plumbing systems in small to mid-sized construction and renovation projects, including ductwork layout, flow calculations, and system sizing.
  • Conduct onsite recommissioning evaluations to assess the condition and performance of air-handling units, pumps, control systems, and other mechanical infrastructure.
  • Identify deficiencies and propose upgrades or sequence improvements to align older equipment with current energy codes and operational standards.
  • Prepare and manage calculations, system reviews, and technical specifications using AutoCAD and/or Revit, and occasionally simulation tools.
  • Ensure compliance with ASHRAE standards, IMC, IPC, IECC, and federal energy mandates.
  • Participate in site assessments and walkthroughs (~25-30% travel) to document existing system conditions and support construction coordination in the DC Metro, Texas, Florida, and other CONUS project areas.
  • Interface with engineers, architects, and facilities teams to collect field data and support building systems troubleshooting, recommissioning reports, and retrofit recommendations.
  • Assist in reviewing submittals, responding to RFIs, and participating in punch lists or post-installation system testing and verification.

Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited school
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in mechanical systems design for HVAC and/or plumbing
  • Familiarity with building recommissioning, HVAC system diagnostics, performance testing, and plumbing design standards
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD; working knowledge of Revit and energy load calculations software (e.g., HAP Trane TRACE 700)
  • Understanding of applicable design and code standards, including ASHRAE, IMC, IPC, and building energy codes
  • Ability to independently support field investigations and prepare design recommendations
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to write technical reports and design memoranda
  • Willingness and ability to travel approximately 25-30%, primarily within the lower 48 states, with frequent visits in the DC Metro area
  • Ability to obtain a Tier 3 Security Clearance - CAC Card

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or EIT pursuing licensure
  • Experience contributing to recommissioning reports or retro-commissioning surveys
  • Exposure to federal or government facilities contracting, and deliverables
  • Certifications such as LEED GA, Certified Energy Manager (CEM), or OSHA 30
