Position Summary

The Reliability Engineer is responsible for improving the reliability and performance of manufacturing equipment and systems within a dairy production facility. This role focuses on reducing downtime, optimizing preventive and predictive maintenance programs, analyzing equipment failures, and leading root cause analysis and continuous improvement initiatives to maximize plant uptime and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

Equipment Reliability



  • Develop and implement asset reliability strategies for critical dairy processing and packaging equipment (e.g., pasteurizers, separators, fillers, CIP systems).
  • Analyze failure modes and recommend design or process improvements to prevent recurrence.
  • Drive asset lifecycle management through effective maintenance, repair, and replacement plans.


Maintenance Optimization



  • Partner with Maintenance and Production teams to enhance preventative maintenance schedules and implement predictive maintenance technologies (e.g., vibration analysis, thermal imaging, oil analysis).
  • Utilize CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) data to track equipment performance and identify areas for improvement.
  • Review and improve spare parts inventory levels based on criticality and usage trends.


Root Cause Analysis & Problem Solving



  • Lead Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) for chronic issues and significant downtime events.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to implement long-term corrective actions and monitor results.
  • Support Teir II troubleshooting and recovery from downtime events


Project Engineering Support



  • Provide technical expertise for reliability-related capital projects and equipment upgrades.
  • Participate in commissioning of new equipment to ensure proper reliability and maintainability standards are met.


Training & Technical Support



  • Educate and mentor maintenance technicians on reliability best practices and failure prevention methods.
  • Support operator training related to basic equipment care and early problem detection.
  • Develop and support technical training



Qualifications

Education & Experience



  • Bachelor of Science degree in a technical, manufacturing, or engineering capacity or Seven or more years of experience in a food or dairy manufacturing/processing plant
  • Experience with CMMS software and reliability tools such as FMEA, RCA, and RCM.
  • Rockwell PLC hardware and software, HMI with Archestra and AB PanelView
  • Mechanical Design customization, optimization
  • Experienced with 480-volt distribution and motor controls
  • Experience with servo, motion control technology
  • Experienced with Variable Frequency drive set up and automation
  • Experienced with a wide variety of control and instrumentation set up and calibration
  • Experience implementing predictive monitoring tools such as vibration analysis, thermography, oil analysis.


Skills & Competencies



  • Demonstration of elevated level of mechanical and or electrical aptitude, including installation, repair, replacement, troubleshooting and maintenance of mechanical and electrical systems common in dairy operations
  • Data-driven mindset with the ability to analyze trends, interpret KPIs, and make informed decisions.
  • Familiarity with regulatory and safety standards (OSHA, FDA, USDA, SQF).
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Certifications such as Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional (CMRP) or Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE) are a plus.


Working Conditions

Work is performed in a dairy manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, moisture, and temperature variations. Requires walking, standing, and occasional lifting; use of PPE required. May require occasional work outside of standard business hours to support shutdowns or emergencies.
