Job Summary

The Health Educator coordinates outreach, recruitment, and retention of Asian Americans to the ASPIRE program in the Division of Hematology Oncology at UC Davis Health, under the direction of the faculty PI, Dr. Moon Chen. Populations of emphasis are Hmong and Vietnamese, requiring fluency in at least one of those languages in addition to English). Most desirable characteristics of the position include interpersonal skills plus qualitative research skills (e.g., key informant interviewing, focus group leadership). The position includes working during evenings and weekends, in addition to mornings/ afternoons, with travel to meet with potential cohort participants, recruit and retain those participants, and engage Asian American-serving community-based organizations. The Coordinator will also serve as liaison to media and utilize social media and other platforms to engage participants and maintain communications with them. #CA-SB

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Completion of HIPAA compliance certification within 60 days of start date
  • Completion of CITI certification within 60 days of start date (for social and behavioral sciences)
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience or training
  • Experience and basic knowledge in delivering health promotion and education programs.
  • Experience and demonstrated skills in community outreach and engagement.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and speak Hmong, Vietnamese, or other Asian languages, and skill to translate study materials from English into selected Asian languages.
  • Strong computer skills using Microsoft Word and Outlook.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with faculty, community-based healthcare professionals, staff and research participants.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills working with a diverse client group.
  • Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to outlying counties.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge in clinical trials, including recruiting diverse community members.

Department Overview

The Division of Hematology and Oncology is one the largest of 14 divisions in the Department of Internal Medicine. The Division is comprised of more than 40 faculty and staff physicians, approx 20 nurse practitioners/physician assistants and other clinical staff, more than 30 administrative/finance/research staff members, and ongoing faculty, staff and advanced practice provider (APP) recruitments. The Division operates large and diverse clinical and research programs in which the faculty are leaders in Oncology, Hematology, Hemophilia, Sickle Cell, Gene Therapy and Thrombosis research and houses the faculty leaders of the Cancer Control and PET imaging programs. The Division is a major component of the NCI-designated UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center and has a strong presence in developmental therapeutics.

Department Specific Job Scope

This part time position requires onsite attendance as well as travelling to offsite communities and clinics, requiring reliable transportation. Working hours are during afternoons and evenings, as well as weekends, 22 hours per week. This is not a work at home opportunity, given the offsite travel and onsite work commitments.

Work Environment
