New Flyer is the established leader in heavy-duty transit bus manufacturing in North America, renowned for our innovative Xcelsior and Xcelsior CHARGE products. We are excited to invite applications for the Lead Hand position, a critical role responsible for supervising a team of assembly workers. In this capacity, you will ensure that production runs smoothly, meeting both quality and safety standards.

Note: This position is open to internal candidates only.

As a Lead Hand, you will be instrumental in mentoring your peers, organizing production workflows, and driving operational efficiency within the assembly team. Your leadership will contribute to a collaborative environment and promote a culture of continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Report and address unsafe work conditions and injuries promptly.
  • Foster communication regarding safety and quality standards upfront with team members.
  • Monitor compliance with established quality benchmarks and address any discrepancies.
  • Participate in reject process management.
  • Champion the 5S initiative by promoting continuous improvement activities and maintaining cleanliness.
  • Encourage employee involvement in OPEN activities, including Kaizen events and housekeeping tasks.
  • Maintain accurate and current VIS boards.
  • Support the cell leader in monitoring equipment conditions and availability.
  • Engage with team members through meetings and support initiatives related to performance.
  • Coordinate work distribution, track manpower loads and shortages, and manage dispatch.
  • Evaluate staffing needs by conducting daily assessments across upstream operations.
  • Ensure that training and cross-training are up-to-date to meet production demands.
  • Build team cohesion through proactive communication and team-building efforts.
  • Participate in long-term planning regarding manpower, layout, tooling, and production changes.
  • Support the disciplinary process by reporting issues of noncompliance per the CBA agreement.

Requirements

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience in manufacturing or assembly roles.
  • Knowledge of assembly processes and quality control standards.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with an ability to build effective teams.
  • Proven ability to tackle problems strategically and with attention to detail.
  • Physical capability to perform duties in an active manufacturing environment.
  • Intermediate computer proficiency is required.
  • Flexibility in work schedule is expected to meet operational needs.
