SmithGroup is looking for an Acoustician to join our team. This position is ideally located within commuting distance of one of our offices, but remote options can be discussed.



As an Acoustical designer you will work under the direction of the acoustical and/or vibration design lead on projects. You will work between disciplines and geographies to perform calculations and coordinate acoustical and vibration design items into project documents. Work will be both internal and client facing.



Working with us, you will:



  • Contribute to integrated architecture and engineering project design teams, advising on room acoustics, sound isolation, mechanical system noise and vibration control, structural vibration, and vibro-acoustic design.
  • Review applicable design standards to create project acoustical goals
  • Collaborate with the acoustical product lead to develop acoustic and vibration control solutions that meet the goals of the project.
  • Produce detailed acoustics and vibration reports, sketches, drawings, details, and specifications as required
  • Perform calculations and provide recommendations to comply with sustainable design systems such as LEED, WELL, GBCI or other and provide final documentation for the application
  • Review construction submittals, shop drawings, RFIs, and complete onsite inspections to review acoustical performance of the project and issue reports for corrective actions
  • Perform field measurements of reverberation time, sound or impact isolation, vibration or other measurements as needed for project.
  • Compile data collected in the field to determine findings and solutions and collaborate to provide reports or documentation to summarize the investigation and findings.
  • Create acoustical models in applicable acoustical software
  • Assist in developing processes to improve efficiency and best in class designs
  • Assist in developing presentations of acoustical concepts and options to a non-technical audience
  • Represent SmithGroup in professional societies and industry associations (ASA, INCE, and others)



An ideal candidate has:



  • A Bachelors degree in Acoustics, Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Structural Engineering, or relevant field, with coursework or specialization in vibration and/or acoustics
  • 3-5+ years of consulting and design experience working as an Acoustics Consultant in support of the design of new construction and major renovation projects in Healthcare, Higher Education, Corporate Workplace, and Science and Technology markets. Experience in recording environments, music education, and performing arts spaces a plus.
  • Experience using a sound level meter / real time analyzer and taking field measurements in accordance with ASTM or other applicable standards
  • Excellent attention to detail and formal documentation
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Willing to listen and learn from mentors and senior staff
  • Strong people skills, as required for team collaboration and cohesion.
  • Proficiency in BlueBeam, Microsoft Office, Revit, Sketch-Up, Ease, Trebel, CadnaA or Soundplan desirable
  • Valid Credential in relevant field (preferred): INCE Board Certification, LEED AP
