The WVU Cancer Institute at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a (Hybrid) Program Coordinator for Training position with Cancer Prevention & Control.

About the Opportunity

This position is responsible for creating content for training and education efforts for the CHATS (Communicating for Health in Appalachia by Translating Science) Core Services in the field of cancer prevention and control with a specific emphasis in cancer communication science. The CHATS Core offers customized training opportunities in health communication, social media, and dissemination science to a variety of professionals and students with a concentration in the health care field.

This position will develop courses for professionals, students, researchers, faculty, staff, or community. Establish a comprehensive process of evaluating training efforts from design to completion. Serve as the primary trainer on various communication topics including but not limited to: relationship-centered communication, health communication, dissemination science, knowledge translation, science communication, professional social media use, and tailored training on CHATS Lab-developed knowledge products.

The Communicating for Health in Appalachia by Translating Science (CHATS) Core provides specialized health communication services that translate research into practice. CHATS blends complementary expertise in communication science and health behavior theory (CHATS Lab) with knowledge translation and dissemination science (CHATS Core) to transform scientific evidence into actionable communication interventions targeted to diverse real-world settings. The CHATS Core consults with internal and external partners providing; (1) Dissemination planning, (2) Communication material development, and (3) Customized training presentations and workshops.

This position serves as the primary point of for CHATS Core training, independently using professional concepts and techniques, as well as organizational policies to solve a wide range of moderate to complex problems in imaginative and practical ways.

What You'll Do



  • Serve as the primary content creator and trainer on various communication topics including but not limited to: relationship-centered communication, health communication, dissemination science, knowledge translation, science communication, professional social media use, health literacy, cultural competency, and cancer screening.
  • Develop all training materials for the CHATS Core including, but not limited Relationship-Centered Communication for Healthcare Professionals; Using Dissemination Science to Strengthen the Research to Practice Pipeline; Social and Behavioral Change Communication; Understanding Appalachian Culture to Support Health Research and Practice; Creating a Professional Social Profile for Health Professionals.
  • Coordinates statewide and regional meetings, trainings, and special events which may include managing the continuing education credit process and other administrative activities related to event planning.
  • Contributes to the design and dissemination of innovative, culturally appropriate, evidence-based programs, content, and services. Provides direction and expertise in program planning, implementation, evaluation, and applied research.
  • Identifies, develops, and maintains partnerships with strategic stakeholders, community, and professional partners, and various community-based organizations throughout West Virginia, the Appalachian region, and the nation.
  • Seeks out clinical and research partnerships to promote training opportunities with existing and new networks to further expand reach of the CHATS Core.
  • Coordinate and deliver in-classroom, virtual or community-based trainings, demonstrations, meetings, conferences, and workshops.
  • Evaluate all training activities documenting short- and long-term impact of training as well as maintaining participation records.
  • Promote Core training opportunities through various networks and work collaboratively with CHATS Lab multimedia specialist to develop promotional materials.
  • Participate in all facilitator and/or train-the-trainer courses as required for the position.
  • Serve as lead trainer for the Department of Cancer prevention & Control.
  • Assess current training practices and needs in the Department of Cancer Prevention & Control and Community Outreach and Engagement.
  • Oversee the professional development opportunities and participation of department staff.
  • Assist Mid-Level Leadership in development and tracking of team members trainings effort to reach their short-and long-term career goals with the department.
  • Functions as a team member of Cancer Prevention and Control (CPC). Assists with other CPC program activities as requested by Senior Staff members.
  • Assists with the development of grant applications to further research opportunities
  • Contributes to articles, abstracts, and posters to promote programmatic work and outreach of CPC.
  • Completes all required WVU trainings and certifications.
  • Functions as a member of the CPC staff and participates in staff meetings, required conferences, training seminars, program meetings, regular team meetings, etc. Includes conferences and training seminars provided by the WVUCI, Mountains of Hope (MOH) Cancer Coalition, and other relevant entities
  • Participates in and contributes to the mission, vision, and strategic plan of WVU Cancer Institute (WVUCI) and the Department of Cancer Prevention and Control (CPC).\]
  • Represents WVU Cancer Institute and/or CPC at state, regional, and national meetings, and conferences.


This Is a hybrid position, requiring at least two days per week on campus and sometimes more. An on-campus work station is provided.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in appropriate discipline: public health, health communications, health education, education, human development, workforce education and development, human resources, or related field.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in the following:

    • Health-related communication
    • Research and/or public health dissemination
    • Curriculum development, workforce training design/delivery, instructional design, learning management or education development programming.


  • An equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.

Preferred Qualifications



  • Master's degree
  • Experience with community outreach and education, public communication and activities, and academic detailing with healthcare personnel
  • Coordinating health education programs, event planning, group dynamics, leadership, and program assessment
