Overview

Provides high quality legal risk analysis, advice and counsel to Insurance Operations (Standard and Surplus Lines), Compliance, Government Relations, and overall growth and retention efforts. Has oversight of moderately complex legal and regulatory issues impacting our business with greater independent decision-making authority. All job duties and responsibilities must be carried out in compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.

Note: (For NJ candidates) This role will be located at our future headquarters in Short Hills, N.J. Until the new headquarters is operational, the successful candidate will be offered the ability to work in our Branchville, N.J. location during this interim period.


Responsibilities

  • Reports on status of matters and provides other information as requested.
  • Works collaboratively and transparently with clients and colleagues, with particular emphasis on timely and appropriate communications.
  • Responsible for ensuring that legal materials and documents provided to or available for client use are timely, commercially reasonable, and drafted in plain English (i.e., example, forms and documents, handbooks, policies, procedures, regulatory compliance, state insurance department complaints, state filings, etc.).
  • Prepares and/or reviews legal documents to ensure compliance. Research, analyze, and interpret case law, law reports, and proposed/existing laws.
  • Furnishes legal risk analysis, advice, and counsel on other issues as assigned by supervisor.
  • Follows the established procedures and assists in a variety of assigned legal projects.
  • Liaise with external functions or operational areas as required.
  • Assist in providing training to the underwriting and claims departments on matters of legal, regulatory or compliance interest.

Qualifications

Knowledge and Requirements

  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to build strong relationships and influence the business.
  • Strong working knowledge of Property & Casualty insurance.
  • Proven decision-making skills
  • Ability to oversee moderately complex issues

Education and Experience

  • Juris Doctor required.
  • 5+ years experience practicing law and, under general instruction, responsible for handling moderately complex issues.
  • General working knowledge of the major lines of Property & Casualty insurance.
  • 2+ years of Regulatory and Compliance analysis experience preferred
