The University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria seeks a talented research professional with a strong background in cancer research for the position of Research Scientist in the Department of Internal Medicine.

Position Summary

This position serves as a research scientist by focusing on research and scientific techniques within the fields of cancer, genetics and infectious diseases. Under general direction, assists the principal investigator by performing moderate research and experimentation following established protocols; performs routine lab and equipment maintenance, such as cleaning glassware, counter tops, and equipment; sets-up and operates various scientific apparatus; assists with research projects and performs various clerical and editorial duties; compiles, processes and analyzes data; performs supervisory and training duties.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Design, execute, and analyze cancer-related experiments using molecular biology, genomics, proteomics, immunology, or pharmacological approaches.
  • Develop and optimize in vitro and in vivo models of cancer.
  • Investigate mechanisms of tumorigenesis, metastasis, drug resistance, or immune response in cancer.
  • Collaborate in the development and testing of new cancer therapies or diagnostic biomarkers.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret experimental data using statistical and bioinformatics tools.
  • Prepare detailed laboratory records and scientific reports.
  • Present findings at lab meetings, conferences, and in peer-reviewed publications.
  • Work closely with Principal Investigator, fellow scientists, faculty members, clinicians, and industry partners on interdisciplinary projects.
  • Contribute to grant writing, progress reports, and research proposals.
  • May supervise research assistants, graduate students, or postdoctoral fellows.
  • Adhere to institutional, federal, and ethical guidelines for research.
  • Maintain safety standards and ensure proper laboratory procedures are followed.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in Cancer Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, or a related scientific field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of postdoctoral research experience.
  • Publication record in peer-reviewed journals.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with animal models of cancer (preferred but not required).
  • Experience with bioinformatics, next-generation sequencing, or systems biology.
  • Background in immuno-oncology, targeted therapies, or translational research.
  • Demonstrated success in securing research funding or contributing to grant applications.

The budgeted salary range for the position is $68,000 to $75,000 per year.
