Fire Pump & Air Compressor Mechanic Specialist
Position Summary:
Colonna's Shipyard is seeking a Fire Pump & Air Compressor Mechanic Specialist for our Shipyard in Norfolk, VA.
The position is located onsite in Norfolk, VA and will often require hours beyond a standard work week with flexible schedule availability to support production/operations. Position may require limited travel.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Key responsibilities include:


  • Troubleshoot and repair air compressors, fire pumps, and generators.
  • Regularly working with variable frequency drives, three phase motors, and ladder logic.
  • Perform corrective and preventative maintenance on generators and other equipment.
  • Trace and locate defects and causes of mechanical problems using a wide range of diagnostic and test equipment. Determine the type and extent of necessary repairs.
  • Fit and install to appropriate tolerances such as pistons, valves, bearings, gears, and cylinders.
  • Make changes or modifications in accordance with specifications and guidelines.
  • Connect, align, adjust system elements to assure proper operation of the complete system or vehicle Field repairs as necessary.
  • Install, repair, maintain, test, and adjust fixed and semi-fixed industrial equipment and machinery such as cranes, pumps, engines, motors, pneumatic tools, conveyor systems, and production machinery.
  • Complete repairs from blueprints, diagrams, operational manuals, manufacturer's specifications, work orders, and other specifications.
  • Disassemble equipment using hoists, cranes, hand tools, and power tools.
  • Determine nature of repair and examines parts to detect imperfections with the use of rulers, micrometers, and other measuring instruments to determine changes in dimensional requirements.
  • Complete repairs by replacing, reworking, or refinishing worn or damaged parts.
  • Reassemble equipment and test performance of equipment.
  • Operation of equipment, preventative maintenance, diagnostic and repair work, and overhaul of minor and major building/utility systems and component.
  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Apply basic math, reading and communication skills.
  • Other duties may be assigned as workload dictates.


Required Qualifications:


  • Must have at least five (5) years of experience in maintaining and repairing electrical and mechanical equipment systems.
  • Must have at least five (5) years of mechanical experience with industrial air compressors, generators, and fire pump smart systems.
  • Must be able to work and coordinate with department mechanics assigned during the installation and maintenance of all systems and equipment.
  • Must have expert knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic system.
  • Must be able to interpret technical drawings, mechanical and electrohydraulic
  • Must be able to identify and resolve the failures of the hydraulic systems, pump adjustments, hoses identification, hydraulic modifications, etc...
  • Must have knowledge of and ability to use hand tools and instruments associated with trade.
  • Must be able to work effectively with others.
  • Must be a steady, reliable worker.


Preferred Skills/Qualifications:


  • Previous technical training highly preferred.


Travel Requirements:


  • Minimal Travel; 10% or less.


Physical Requirements:


  • Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 20 lbs.
  • Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including enter and moving through manholes.
  • Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
  • Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
  • Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts.
  • While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl.
  • Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation
  • Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding, cutting, or working with molten metal.
