Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The Program for Public Discourse (
PPD) is a Program housed in the School of Civic Life and Leadership (SCiLL) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. PPD's mission is to prepare students for lives of civic leadership by empowering them to flourish in the democratic tradition of reasoning together for the public good. Specifically, we aim to sharpen student capacities for argumentative inquiry, situated in the rhetorical tradition of public deliberation.
PPD hosts the Abbey Speakers' Series, Agora Fellows Program, and other seminars, programs, and events to engage students, faculty, and the public.
SCiLL provides an interdisciplinary home specifically for the study and practice of public discourse, civic life, and civic leadership. SCiLL provides students a grounding in the foundations and current state of American political experience and democracy. A wide range of courses build on this foundation to encourage thoughtful engagement with democracy and civic discourse among citizens and leaders. SCiLL also supports the Civil Discourse Community, a residential living-learning program in partnership with residential life. |
Position Summary |
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
The Program for Public Discourse (
PPD) is a program within the School of Civic Life and Leadership (SCiLL) at
UNC-CH. The program is designed to support a culture of robust public argument through curricular and extra-curricular engagement, equipping students with the rhetorical and deliberative capacities to serve Carolina and beyond as citizens, leaders, and stewards of democracy. Job duties will include working with the Program Director of
PPD to assist public and student events. The position will also help support SCiLL events or programming for its Libertas Scholars and the Civil Discourse Community. Attending events outside of regular business hours is required. These events occur approximately 4-6 times per semester. The holder of this position may be eligible for overtime compensation for additional work beyond this performed outside of business hours. Examples of responsibilities include handling receipts for reimbursement, submitting receipts for reimbursement, booking event venues, coordinating with speakers, and researching speakers. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as excellent organizational skills. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office suite, including Word and Excel. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Familiarity with a higher education setting preferred. |
