Assistant Athletic Trainer

Reporting to the Head Athletic Trainer, this role plays a vital role in ensuring the health, safety and competitive readiness of Widener's 21 varsity athletic teams. Ideal candidates will be available for hire in spring 2026 with a start date no later than August 1, 2026.

Widener University, a NCAA Division III Commonwealth Conference member of the Middle Atlantic Conferences, is currently seeking an Assistant Athletic Trainer in the Widener University Department of Athletics. Reporting to the Head Athletic Trainer, this role provides support to Widener's 21 athletic teams throughout the academic year. The Assistant Athletic Trainer is a member of the athletic training staff responsible for providing high-quality care for the student-athletes participating on the 21 NCAA Division III varsity teams. The primary objective is to help provide the safest possible sports experience for the student-athletes by preventing as many injuries as possible, and properly managing the injuries that do occur. Additional responsibilities may be assigned in areas such as committee work, and administrative duties.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to):

Essential duties:

Student-Athlete Healthcare & Injury Management

• Serve as the primary athletic trainer for assigned sport programs, establishing strong, trust-based relationships with student-athletes and coaches.
• Make informed return-to-play decisions in collaboration with team physicians and allied healthcare professionals to ensure the safest possible competitive experience.

Communication & Collaboration

• Clearly communicate injury status, care plans, and participation clearance while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.

Compliance & Risk Management

• Maintain accurate and timely medical documentation using designated electronic medical record systems in accordance with NCAA, NATA, BOC, HIPAA, FERPA, and institutional standards.
• Ensure compliance with Title IX, Clery Act, and other applicable federal, state, and university regulations.

Insurance & Administrative Oversight

• Assist student-athletes in navigating medical billing and insurance documentation.

Clinical Education & Program Support

• Serve as a clinical preceptor for CAATE-accredited athletic training students and supervise student workers and interns.
• Participate in professional development activities to maintain BOC certification and Pennsylvania licensure.

Secondary responsibilities:

In addition to core healthcare responsibilities, the Assistant Athletic Trainer contributes to the broader mission and operational excellence of the Department of Athletics:

Student Wellness & Preventative Care

• Conduct baseline concussion testing and oversee concussion protocol management.
• Review required medical documentation for incoming and transfer student-athletes and facilitates necessary follow-up care.
• Support data collection and analysis related to injury trends and prevention strategies.

Facilities & Operations

• Support daily operations of the athletic training facilities, including inventory management, equipment maintenance, and supply oversight.

Campus Engagement & Inclusive Excellence

• Contribute to a respectful, inclusive, and student-focused environment that reflects the values of a small private university community.
• Support institutional priorities related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education/training and experience required):

Required:

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution (Master's degree preferred; see below) with two (2) years' experience as athletic trainer. A combination of education and experience may be considered.
• Board of Certification (BOC) Certification in Athletic Training.
• Pennsylvania Athletic Training Licensure (or eligibility to obtain prior to start date).
• Current CPR, AED, and First Aid Certification.
• Demonstrated knowledge of injury prevention, clinical evaluation, emergency response, therapeutic intervention, and rehabilitation principles.
• Ability to work non-traditional hours including evenings and weekends, consistent with intercollegiate athletics schedules.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build trust with student-athletes, coaches, parents, and healthcare providers.
• Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA, FERPA, NCAA, and institutional standards.

Preferred:

• Master's degree in athletic training, Sports Medicine, or related field.
• Previous experience working as an athletic trainer in a collegiate setting, ideally within NCAA Division III.
• Experience serving as a primary athletic trainer for assigned sports, including independent injury management and return-to-play decisions.
• Experience with electronic medical record systems and injury tracking software.
• Familiarity with excess medical insurance management and claims processes.
• Clinical education or preceptor experience with athletic training students.
• Instructor-level CPR/AED certification.
• Demonstrated ability to contribute to inclusive team cultures and student development initiatives.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND/OR UNUSUAL HOURS:

• Nontraditional hours - weekends, nights, days etc.
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The individual must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. The ability to perform emergency protocols, provide appropriate hydration and monitor the safety of the environment in which the practice or game is taking place.
• The ability to perform these tasks includes, but is not limited to, being physically able to transport an injured student-athlete from the field of play in a timely fashion, being physically able to get in a position to assess the student athlete's injury in an acute situation (i.e. squatting, kneeling, bending, ability to lift and/or move 25-50 lbs., etc.)
