The compensation offered to the candidate selected for the position will depend on several factors, including the candidate's educational background, skills and professional experience.

Job Overview:

Under indirect supervision, the Genetic Counselor provides genetic education, counseling and psychological support to patients and their family members who may be at risk for a variety of inherited oncology conditions. Identifies families at risk, assesses risks, interprets information about disease, analyzes inheritance patterns, reviews testing options, interprets genetic test results and in concert with a physician, reviews available medical management options.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Master's degree in Science from an accredited Human Genetics Program, specializing in genetic counseling required.

  • Must be considered board eligible by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.

  • Interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients and referring physicians.

Preferred:

  • Board certification strongly preferred.

  • Prior experience strongly preferred.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides genetic counseling to patients including an explanation of how heredity contributes to the patient's risk, discusses management of that risk, discusses risks and benefits of genetic testing, assists patients and their family members to make the best possible decisions regarding genetic information in the context of their own circumstances, and evaluates the patient's or family's responses to the condition, perception of risk, or risk of recurrence.

  • Assesses and interprets the risk for occurrence and or recurrence of genetic conditions in the family and discuss with the physician. Determine appropriate genetic screening and diagnostic testing based in risk factors.

  • Construct and analyze a patient's family history and all relevant medical problems in addition to addressing the reason for referral.

  • Counsel patients on the nature of the conditions in question, including the contribution of heredity. Counseling includes risks, benefits and limitations of genetic testing.

  • Develop, produce and distribute educational materials to patients and referring physicians regarding current advances in medical genetics and genetic counseling.

  • Documents all counseling issues discussed with patients and services provided including interpretation of test results and management plans, as discussed with the physician. Appropriate documentation sent to patients and referring physicians.

  • Interact with referring physicians to clarify reason for referral, request necessary medical records and educate about referral process. Coordinate follow-up and management of genetic testing results with physicians.

  • Coordinate the processing and shipment of samples for genetic studies.

  • Provide critical genetic information to patients in a non-directive, empathic, culturally sensitive and educational appropriate manner, thus empowering patients with the ability to make autonomous decisions.

  • Provide supportive counseling and referral to other relevant medical professionals, support groups and community resources when appropriate.
