Flint Hills Resources Pine Bend Refinery in Rosemount, MN located in the Minneapolis/St. Paul Metro is hiring an Electrical Plant Engineer. This role is a position that builds refinery operations knowledge and understanding and application of key engineering fundamentals. These skills will enable further career opportunities in electrical, instrumentation and controls within the refinery. This entry level role entails apprentice-style rotations in electrical reliability, instrument reliability, and/or digital capabilities.

Our Team

This role will work with refinery engineers, technicians, operators, and other personnel to help the facility safely operate and maintain its instrumentation, electrical, and control system assets. As an electrical plant engineer, you will develop and demonstrate an understanding of:

  • How to drive innovation and transformation, make calculated bets, improve efficiency, expand capability, and create value through the application of Principled Based Management
  • Leading/fostering a safety culture that identifies hazards and eliminates/controls risks
  • Oil flow and high-level function of refinery process units and basic refinery economics
  • Analytical skills and engineering knowledge to identify, assess, and implement EH&S and business improvement opportunities
  • Identifying, recommending and implementing equipment improvements, new systems and process changes that reduce risk to employees, improve productivity, yield, quality and/or reduce costs
  • Providing technical support for specifications and design reviews for existing equipment and new equipment installations
  • Leading and promoting Root Cause Analysis; i.e.. Capturing and categorizing loss events and advancing strategies around asset reliability
  • Collaborating with leaders and technicians to eliminate repeated failures
  • Leading projects to improve asset performance
  • Providing technical support for operations and maintenance technicians to improve skills and knowledge
  • Performing electrical distribution system load flow analyses, arc flash analyses, etc.
  • Preparing justifications, engineering work scopes, and cost estimates for maintenance projects or capital projects
  • Help manage the site equipment's lifecycle, including making recommendations on replacement/refurbishment

Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)

  • Education required: Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or related field

What Will Put You Ahead

  • Demonstrated project management skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of electrical codes and standards (NEC, NFPA 70E, etc)
  • Experience in application engineering of electrical assets (i.e. switchgear, motors, drives, electric actuators, etc.)
  • Experience in power system load flow analysis and arc flash analysis
  • Experience in reliability, availability, and maintainability (RAM) analyses
  • Experience in industrial control systems and instrumentation
  • 0-5 years in refining or petrochemical processes, other heavy industrial environment, or equivalent applicable military experience




For this role, we anticipate paying $90,0000- $120,000 per year. This role is eligible for variable pay, issued as a monetary bonus or in another form.
