DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this role, you will play a crucial part in ensuring that projects within PennDOT's District 6-0 (greater Philadelphia area) are executed with a keen awareness of their potential effects on cultural resources, all while adhering to environmentally sensitive practices. Your responsibilities will include identifying and addressing challenges related to cultural resource considerations that arise during the planning, design, construction, and maintenance phases of highway and transportation development initiatives. On a daily basis, you will be tasked with drafting scopes of work for cultural resource assessments and meticulously reviewing environmental documents and associated reports to verify compliance with departmental standards, as well as ensuring their completeness and accuracy. Furthermore, you will oversee archaeological investigations, assessing site boundaries, significance, and the extent of impact. Your role will also involve conducting quality control assessments on district projects and supporting the implementation of the department's preservation plan, thereby contributing to the safeguarding of cultural heritage in the context of transportation development.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • This position will be based in the District 6 office in King of Prussia.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in King of Prussia. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two or more years of experience working on an architectural survey, an architectural restoration and preservation project or program, and a bachelor's degree in architectural history, American history, art history or course work in Pennsylvania history; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training.

Additional Requirements:

  • Meet or exceed the Secretary of the Interior's (SOI) minimum professional qualification standards to work as an archaeologist. Standards can be found here.
  • One or more years of full-time professional experience or equivalent specialized training in archeological research, administration, or management.
  • Four or more months of supervised field and analytic experience in general North American archeology.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry research to completion.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
Preferred Qualifications (not required):
  • Master's degree (or higher) in Pennsylvania or Mid-Atlantic Archaeology.
  • Graduate degree in archeology, anthropology, or closely related field.
  • Experience working full-time in conducting archaeological surveys, National Register eligibility archaeological site evaluations, and/or conducting data recovery mitigation efforts on National Register eligible archaeological sites.
  • Professional experience using Geographic Information Systems.
