DESCRIPTION

The Transfusion Service/Blood Bank Supervisor is responsible for the daily operations, technical oversight, and regulatory compliance of a high-complexity transfusion service within a large academic medical center. This service supports advanced patient care including massive transfusion protocols, neonatal and pediatric transfusion, stem cell and solid organ transplant, oncology, and specialized procedures such as therapeutic apheresis and red cell exchange. The supervisor ensures accurate and timely testing, safe blood product modification, and appropriate utilization of blood components while maintaining compliance with CAP, AABB, FDA, and hospital regulatory standards. The supervisor oversees the daily operations, staff supervision, quality, and regulatory compliance of the transfusion service, ensuring safe, accurate, and timely blood testing, product modification, and clinical support for complex patient care.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or related field require; Master's degree preferred.
  • Licensure in respective clinical area: General Clinical Lab: Clinical Laboratory Scientist License (CLS) issued by CDPH.
  • Current MT/MLS (ASCP or equivalent) required.
  • A minimum of five (5+) or more years of clinical laboratory experience in transfusion medicine.
  • In-depth knowledge of immunohematology, transfusion practices, blood product preparation/modification, and regulatory requirements.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • SBB (Specialist in Blood Banking, ASCP) certification.
  • Experience with blood bank information systems (e.g. SoftBank)
  • Experience with Ortho Vision analyzer.
  • Experience with cellular therapy or advanced product modification workflows.
  • Experience preparing for and managing CAP, FDA, AABB, or Joint Commission inspections.
  • Training or Certification in lean six sigma or other quality improvement methodologies.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.
  • Laboratory management experience and extensive knowledge of the clinical laboratory, especially in the area(s) to which is assigned.
  • Experience and proven success in maintaining current knowledge of laboratory concepts, new methodologies, and advances in the field of specimen processing, automation, and procedures.

  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $119,400 - $230,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $57.18 - $110.54

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
