DESCRIPTION

The UC San Diego Department of Surgery ranks among the top surgery departments in the nation. The Department conducts cutting-edge translational and clinical surgical research while providing advanced patient care and serving the community through outreach and education programs. One of the Department's missions is to translate promising scientific discoveries into new and better options for the care of patients with surgical diseases. The Department supports one of the broadest ranges of research activities in the nation - from translational research in biology and therapeutics to health services research, bioengineering, and surgical education research.

Under the supervision of the Director of Communications, the Communications Specialist 1 assists in developing a variety of public-facing content for the Department of Surgery, including newsletters, feature articles, Q&As, web content, the Humans of Surgery project, social media, and other science-related materials. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong foundational writing and communication skills, meets deadlines, and thrives in a fast-paced environment with a high volume of projects. Strong writing and communication skills, including an interest in science writing, are preferred.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Four years (4) of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor's degree in related area.

  • Basic knowledge of concepts and principles of news, media communications and media relations. Fundamental understanding of the concepts and principles of journalism and communications. Basic understanding of the scientific publication process, including submission, review, and acceptance.

  • Basic skills in social media and electronic communications to disseminate messages to target audiences. Responds to emails, Teams messages, and Asana messages during working hours.

  • Basic knowledge of the location, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, objectives, programs and infrastructure.

  • Basic written, verbal, interpersonal communication skills and political acumen. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including writing, editing, and copyediting. Ability to be articulate and poised, maintaining professionalism when communicating with busy faculty members.

  • Basic organizational skills. Strong organizational skills combined with a high level of patience, persistence, and professionalism. Ability to be goal-oriented, self-motivated, and reliable.

  • Skill to maintain confidentiality. Ability to possess personal integrity and sound judgment, including maintaining confidentiality.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

  • May occasionally require evening and weekend commitments to support events based on departmental needs.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $55,400 - $93,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $26.53 - $44.92

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
