HOOS FleetKeeper (Staff Wage)

HOOS FLEETKEEPERS TRAINING PROGRAM

University Transit Service (UTS) at the University of Virginia's Department of Parking and Transportation is searching for candidates for the UTS HOOS FleetKeepers Training Program. The HOOS FleetKeepers Training Program provides structured coursework and paid on-the-job training as a part-time, staff wage FleetKeeper with UTS. FleetKeepers work within UTS to provide auxiliary support to our transportation services for the University of Virginia community. Upon completion of training, employees will have been onboarded at UVA, completed safety training and digital literacy skills instruction, and have the necessary workplace skills to serve a FleetKeeper for UTS. After training, employees will begin on-the-job training with UTS beginning Monday, January 5, 2026.

Paid training includes:

• Orientation and Onboarding.
• Safety Training - OSHA 10 Safety Training, OSHA 10 Bloodborne Pathogens Training, American Red Cross First Aid, CPR, and AED Training.
• Workplace Readiness Training - communication, time management, teamwork, problem-solving, conflict resolution, professional etiquette, etc.
• Digital Literacy Skills Training - basic computer and mobile device usage, navigating Workday for work-related functions, etc.

Training will take place from Monday, December 1, 2025, to Friday, December 19, 2025. Training will be held five days a week, Monday through Friday, from 1:00pm to 5:00pm at the Department of Parking & Transportation.

FLEETKEEPER POSITION

FleetKeepers work within University Transit Service to provide auxiliary support to our transportation services for the University of Virginia community. FleetKeepers ensure that our vehicles and facilities are clean, safe, and hygienic, maintaining a pleasant environment for the people we serve.

Duties include but are not limited to:

• Servicing transit buses and department support vehicles both gasoline/diesel-powered and electric daily.
• Collection of logs regarding cleaning, charging, fueling, and additional fluid servicing weekly.
• Assisting service crew and supervisors with the parking organization of transit buses and support vehicles in Parking & Transportation lot.
• Performing frontline treatment of Parking & Transportation lot during emergency weather events (snow removal, de-icing, etc.).
• Assisting service crew and fleet technicians with inventory of necessary supplies including vehicle fluids, cleaning supplies, spill response absorbent, and uniforms.
• Providing both interior and exterior cleaning of all Parking & Transportation vehicles including but not limited to: washing, vacuuming, steaming, disinfectant spraying, and waxing.
• Providing general custodial duties aboard buses, within the operations area, and around the bus lot. This responsibility includes sweeping, mopping, sanitizing surfaces, and removing trash.
• Work with operations team and service crew staff to keep on-board advertising up to date. This includes swapping out ads, checking for proper mounting, and conducting inventory.
• Assist other units at Parking & Transportation with supportive tasks such as performing parking space inventory counts and garage, parking lot, and signage cleaning.
• In addition to the above responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Physical Demands

• Work performed as part of servicing the equipment requires high amounts of standing, walking, and the potential for bending, lifting, and carrying.
• The essential custodial duties require a variety of physical activities, including standing, walking, sitting, and using hands to handle objects. They may also involve reaching, climbing, balancing, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. Lifting and carrying objects up to 50 pounds may also be requested. Custodial duties will involve exposure and handling of cleaning equipment and materials.
• Boarding/alighting the transit bus requires the ability to climb stairs (at least one step up/down). Successful operation of ADA Accessible equipment aboard the transit bus requires bending, lifting, and carrying. All of these physical requirements should be considered essential to the position.

PROGRAM AND POSITION MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: None

Experience: None

Licensure: Virginia Driver's license in good standing is a plus but not required.

Preferred Requirements:

• The ability to follow specific instructions and communicate effectively with coworkers.
• General knowledge of computer usage; ability to type, use email, and interface with web-based systems for payroll and performance management is preferred, but not required.

Anticipated Hiring Range

This is a part-time hourly wage position ($17.00/hour). Benefits ineligible. Up to ~20-hour flex work per week. Hour requirements are flexible after training is complete.

Note: University Transit Service and Parking and Transportation have services that operate 24 hours per day / 7 days a week. As such, the FleetKeeper schedule may/will fall outside of the "normal" 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM daytime schedule. FleetKeeper schedules, assignments, and workspaces will vary, so flexibility is required.
