Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The UNC Adams School of Dentistry - Department of Periodontology, Endodontics, and Dental Hygiene is comprised of several disciplines. The Periodontology discipline focuses on the prevention and treatment of periodontal (gum) disease, as well as the management of gum and tissue inflammation resulting from existing dental conditions
Position Summary
This position will focus on performing biochemical and structural biology research at the interface between human health and the oral microbiome. The position will be part-time and in the research team of Dr. Adam Lietzan in the Department of Periodontology, Endodontics, and Dental Hygiene located in the Koury Oral Health Sciences building. The Lietzan Lab identifies and characterizes molecular mechanisms involved in periodontal (gum) disease. As such, the person in this position will work directly with Dr. Adam Lietzan to provide support to his ongoing research projects. This position requires good organizational skills, self-motivation, critical thinking, and an ability to work directly with students and dental residents. The applicant should have previous laboratory experience with preference towards protein biochemical methods such as cloning, recombinant protein expression and purification, enzyme kinetics, and protein crystallization.

Daily activities include:
- Develop research protocols, perform experiments, and properly maintain laboratory records
- Coordinate and support ongoing laboratory activities
- Maintain laboratory equipment, common stocks, and inventory
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Perform standardized techniques and procedures established in the laboratory and presented in the scientific literature. Modification of these techniques is expected based on emerging knowledge gained and experiences in conducting techniques for our specific purposes.
- General knowledge of the maintenance of scientific equipment.
- Ability to work with human samples.
- Reviewing the work of others, including internal and external collaborators.
- Experience with ordering, invoice tracking, and maintaining laboratory stocks.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Course work in biological sciences, chemistry, or biochemistry, or related field. Lab management.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Must be able to move up to 20 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
