What to Expect
Tesla Energy accelerates the world's transition to sustainable energy. We do that by building some of the most successful residential energy products in the world. You may know about Powerwall, our class-defining solar-integrated battery that helps customers all over the world save money and stabilizes the grid in California, Texas, and Puerto Rico on a regular basis. And then there's Powershare, which lets customers power their home with their Tesla vehicle, and so much more.

The Tesla Energy Residential Device Software team is looking for a Controls Software Engineer to design and build the control stack for these products and the next generation. This primarily means translating grid compliance requirements, hardware capabilities, and product design into a scalable and versatile software architecture. Your ability to understand and model complex systems, break down problems, clarify requirements, and solve problems creatively will be key strengths that we expect you to bring to the table. Experience with building microgrid and/or grid-tied inverter controls and the relevant compliance regimes are a huge plus.

What You'll Do
  • Collaborate with firmware, hardware, product, and compliance teams to define requirements for control behaviors
  • Develop control models of residential systems in simulations (Matlab/Simulink)
  • Implement control algorithms and integration tests (SiL, HiL) in software
  • Perform hands-on testing, validation, and troubleshooting of control algorithms on residential hardware
  • Support safety/compliance testing

What You'll Bring
  • Degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or equivalent experience
  • Strong analytical and hands-on troubleshooting skills
  • Experience with software development in systems languages (e.g. C, C++, Rust), preferably for real-time controls systems
  • Experience with controls system fundamentals and modeling
  • Familiarity with grid and/or microgrid operation as well as safety and compliance standards (UL 1741, IEEE 1547, etc.) for grid-connected power electronics is a plus
