Position Description:

Department: Anesthesiology

Division: Pediatric Anesthesiology

The Medical College of Wisconsin's Department of `Anesthesiology, Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology, is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to provide care within the Pre-anesthesia Evaluation Center. This position is located in Milwaukee, WI at Children's Wisconsin - Milwaukee Campus. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team who will contribute to excellence in program administration, patient care, patient safety, research, quality improvement, and teaching.

Position Highlights:

  • Perform preanesthetic evaluation (including medical and surgical history from parent and child, a review of previous medical records, including previous anesthetic records, and focused physical examination), provide family education/instruction and other preparations for anesthesia/surgery to include NPO status, pre meditation, psychological and medical preparation in consultation with the anesthesiologist when appropriate. Also includes a past anesthetic, medical and surgical history from parent and child, a review of previous medical records, including previous anesthetic records and a preoperative anesthetic exam. Based on this assessment, preoperative lab work, x-rays and other studies would be reviewed or ordered as appropriate.
  • Collaborates with a multidisciplinary team in the establishment of goals and implementation of the plan of care; identifies priorities and realistic outcomes for intervention; identifies and communicates potential solutions to variances; implements identified solutions. Works with nursing staff to develop systems to expedite service for frequently seen patient population
  • Patient population evaluated and treated are pre-procedural sedation patients requiring anesthesia
  • Synthesizes and evaluates comprehensive data regarding the individualized patient/family responses along the continuum of care; Establishes differential diagnoses based on the assessment data; selects and interprets diagnostic tests and procedures; establishes appropriate priorities of care; makes independent judgments and prescribes changes in treatment in collaboration with physicians, nurses and other members of the health care team; negotiates systems, plans and directs the implementation of change related to program plans and standards

  • Teaching and academic responsibilities will be part of this role, especially with the SRNA, residency and fellowship programs to have PEC experience
  • Reports to Division Chief of Pediatric Anesthesiology

Core Advanced Practice Responsibilities:

  • Performs comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive and psychosocial status.
  • Orders and interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests.
  • Develops pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.
  • Monitors effectiveness of plan of care.
  • Educates patients on disease and treatment plans.
  • Performs procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed.
  • Documents within the EMR and completes other necessary documents.
  • Collaborates and/or consults with physicians and other health care team members as appropriate.
  • Educates, counsels, and assists patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventive treatments as needed.

Minimum Education:

  • Advanced Practice Nurse: Master's Degree or higher in Nursing from a nationally accredited organization.
  • Physician Assistant: Bachelor's Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies from an ARC-PA-accredited organization.
