Position Summary This position will be in the lab of Dr. Joseph E. Peters in the Department of Microbiology. Research in the Peters' lab broadly involves deciphering mechanisms in genome stability and evolution in bacteria and also uses this information to develop genetic tools. A specific focus is determining the role of mobile genetic elements called transposon play in the process of evolution, understanding the basic mechanisms regulating transposition, and applying transposons as tools for genome modification. This position's primary responsibility will be to manage and participate in ongoing projects adapting novel types of Tn7-like elements as tools for genome modification in all domains of life. Various government agencies and commercial interests fund these projects. Evaluate and examine laboratory equipment and troubleshoot/handle simple repairs and problems. Maintain lab equipment and train new lab members in equipment use. Coordinate sample shipping and data sharing to and from collaborating labs. Provide assistance with overall lab maintenance, including coordination with other lab members to order supplies, update inventories, and maintain lab cleanliness. Participate in lab group meetings. Provide instruction, training, and direction to Visiting Scientists, Postdoctoral Associates, and graduate and undergraduate students as directed by supervisors. This position is full-time (39 hours/week) and will be located in Ithaca, New York. This is a one-year appointment with possible extension depending on funding and performance.
