Overview:

We are seeking a Section Head for Accelerator Science and Technology who will lead the effort to support the accelerator physics, beam instrumentation, and mechanical engineer effort to support safe, reliable, high-power operations of the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) accelerator. This position resides in the Research Accelerator Division (RAD) in theNeutron Sciences Directorate(NScD) atOak Ridge National Laboratory(ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Lead, coordinate, and facilitate efforts in accelerator physics, beam instrumentation, and mechanical engineering to support safe, reliable, high-power operations of the SNS accelerator.
  • Work collaboratively with group leaders to develop and execute a strategic R&D vision that enhances the performance of the SNS accelerator and has broad impact across the accelerator community.
  • Work collaboratively with group leaders to support and promote professional development opportunities for all section staff.
  • Drive and uphold a strong culture of safety in all activities.
  • Collaborate with group leaders and staff to identify and respond to external funding opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with external program managers.
  • Represent the Accelerator Science and Technology section to RAD, NScD, ORNL, and the broader external community.
  • Support the mission of the Accelerator Institute to expand the application space of accelerator technologies.
  • Demonstrate leadership in the external community through participation in facility reviews, conference organization, and professional societies.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD degree in physics or a related field with at least 12 years of relevant experience.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in leading scientific and/or technical groups.
  • Experience developing external grant proposals and leading projects.
  • Record of impactful contributions to high power accelerator operations.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five years of experience in leading scientific and/or technical groups.
  • Proven record of impact in the community as demonstrated by invited talks, peer reviewed publications, and professional society involvement.
  • Experience leading an externally funded project.

Security, Credentialing, and Eligibility Requirements:

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.
  • For employment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a Real ID compliant form of identification will be required.
  • Additionally, ORNL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions. All employees must also be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card as mandated by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, which requires a favorable post-employment background investigation.
  • To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.

For foreign national candidates:

  • If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO) risk determination to maintain employment.
  • Once you meet the three-year residency requirement, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment.
