POSITION DESCRIPTION
APPRENTICE LINEMAN
POSITION OBJECTIVES: To ensure optimum results in providing prompt, efficient, reliable and
courteous service on construction, operation and maintenance requirements of this position
which will achieve the objectives of the Cooperative and the department or district to which
assigned; to communicate and promote teamwork and cooperation in accordance with the
Cooperative's mission, vision and values.
MINIMUM JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
All requirements are subject to possible modification to reasonably accommodate individuals

EDUCATION: Require High school diploma or equivalent. Prefer an Electrical Lineworker
Certificate from an accredited technical college. Must possess or obtain a CDL Learner's
Permit within the first 6 months in the position, keep the learner's permit for at least 6 months,
and obtain a CDL within one year from the date of hire in the position.
EXPERIENCE: Prefer a minimum of six (6) months of progressive experience in electric
system line construction, operations, and maintenance in a line crew and Lineman Helper or
Ground man-type activities with periodic line work assignments that demonstrate pole climbing
interests and abilities.
KNOWLEDGE: Require being in the process of learning the principles and practices utilized in
line construction, service, operation, and maintenance of an electric distribution system.
Knowledge requirements of basic electricity and transformers equivalent to that contained in the
courses accepted by the industry will be met with evidence of successful completion of such
courses. Requires learning and becoming familiar with the operations, maintenance, and repair
of switching and sectionalizing equipment. Requires learning and becoming familiar with the
installation of transformers, wiring of transformers, transformer banks, regulators, capacitors,
and other distribution equipment. Requires becoming familiar with all hazards and shall conduct
his/her work in a safe manner, observing all safety rules. Requires learning and becoming
familiar with RUS specifications, National Electric Code, and National Electric Safety Code.
Require a willingness to pursue a continuous program of self-development both inside and
outside of work hours in furthering his/her knowledge to develop in the job and accept
increasing responsibilities.
SKILLS: Require effective leadership skills, excellent communications skills, both written and
verbal, and the ability to work in a team environment. Require demonstrated interest and ability
to learn and progress in training to perform line work and be systematically applying him/herself
to the development of abilities and skills required in Lineman activities of an electric distribution
system. Require the ability to conduct him/herself in a courteous manner and gain the respect
of fellow Employees and Cooperative members when work assignments result in contact.
Require the availability to assist with power restoration and other essential customer service
tasks as needed to maintain continuity of service to customers.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS AND CONDITIONS:

Reports to: Line Foreman or other assigned Supervisor
Directs: None.
Internal: Actively participates within the Cooperative team environment to develop supportive
relationships essential to the success of the functions of this position, achieving the results
expected and encouraging throughout the organization the concepts of teamwork and
cooperative spirit.
External: Develops and maintains supportive relationships with member/consumers, the
general public,
and other external contacts to assure positive results.
This position requires medium work; visual acuity in mobile equipment operations with
inspection; repetitive motions, hearing, talking, feeling, grasping, lifting, pulling, pushing,
walking, standing, reaching, crawling, crouching, kneeling, stooping, balancing, climbing; and is
subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions in extreme heat or cold with noise,
vibrations, and/or hazards.
The following are the essential duties of this position and do not include marginal functions that
are incidental to the performance of fundamental job duties. The scope and duties of a given
position may change or be temporarily altered based on the needs of Jackson Electric
Membership Corporation. This document does not create an employment contract, implied or
otherwise, other than an "at will" employment document.
Residency: This position requires a residency within a twenty five (25) mile radius of the Office
of employment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Learns the basics of transformer installation and operation. Learns the characteristics of
three phase line operation.
2. Learns to install, move, or removes transformers, security lights, secondaries, service
drops, circuit breakers, poles, conductors, capacitors, regulators, reclosers, and/or any
other line equipment under direct supervision and when assigned.
3. Learns to install or remove instrument transformers, recording or indicating meters of all
types, and learns to make load and voltage tests under direct supervision and when
assigned.
4. Learns to patrol distribution lines; learns to operate and maintain related equipment;
learns distribution switching, sectionalizing and fusing when assigned.
5. Sees that assigned trucks, tools, and working equipment are properly used and kept in
good working order and that any required repairs are promptly reported to the Line
Foreman or assigned Supervisor.
6. Learns submission guidelines for time, mileage, and gas tickets, material charge-outs
and credit-ins, and any other clerical forms or other required procedural work.
7. Learns to read and interpret staking sheets; learns all RUS specifications and line
construction assemblies; learns the National Electrical Safety Code and applicable
portions of the National Electric Code and any other specifications or instructional
material the Cooperative may incorporate on line construction.

8. Operates automotive and construction equipment when assigned; complies with all
traffic laws, safety rules, regulations and safe practices when operating assigned
vehicle; at all times looks out for the safety of the vehicle, occupants and loads.
9. Learns modern methods to be able to perform first aid, artificial respiration and pole top
rescue/resuscitation.
10. Studies the Cooperative's electrical and mechanical tagging rules and other numbering
systems. Studies layout and characteristics of electrical distribution lines in the district or
area to which assigned.
11. Performs on-call duty assignments as a condition of employment when scheduled and
required to maintain continuity of service after regular working hours on Saturdays,
Sundays and holidays observed by the Cooperative.
12. Is available after hours to assist with power restoration and other essential customer
service tasks as needed to maintain continuity of service to customers.
13. Receives communications and directives, verbally confirms full understanding, and
keeps Line Foreman and or other assigned supervisor informed of important information
concerning the work performed.
14. Studies lineman manuals and other instructional guidelines to complete requirements
outlined in the specifications for this position.
15. Is familiar with and follows the best safety practices set forth in the Cooperative's Safety
Manual.
16. Keeps informed of all Cooperative policies and procedures and attends and participates
in all required safety meetings scheduled by the Cooperative.
17. Participates in annual meeting as required or directed.
18. Performs other related work of this or any other classification requiring equal or lesser
skill when assigned by the Line Foreman or other supervisor.
