Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The department of Academic Advising contributes to the University College mission of ensuring the successful transition of first- and second-year students into the University to put them on track toward graduation in four years.
Primary Purpose of Position
The University College Coordinator of Academic Advising & Training plays a critical role in supporting student success by overseeing academic and developmental advising of NCCU students at the freshmen and sophomore levels in University College. The position reports to the Associate Dean with the primary function of oversight and coordination of higher-level tasks associated with the Academic Advising Unit in University College including leading staff training and professional development, conducting unit wide assessments, organizing student programming, addressing student complaints, and leveraging advising technology. The Coordinator of Academic Advising & Training will collaborate with student affairs offices, department chairs, and academic program coordinators to help progress a holistic campus advising structure that recognizes the interconnected nature of students' health and personal lives with their academic plans. The Coordinator of Academic Advising & Training will also maintain a reduced student advising caseload (approximately .25 of average advising load) of first year students, sophomores, and transfer students.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Excellent organizational and communication skills including ability to prioritize work and multitask. Familiarity with and appreciation for the mission and structure of NCCU programs and curricula. Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with students, supervisors, and colleagues. Commitment to ongoing professional development.
Minimum Education/Experience
Master's degree required in education, counseling, or similar related field required, with three (3) to five (5) years experience in higher education to include excellent advising preferred.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties


Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Provide strategic day-to-day oversight of professional academic advisors in University College to ensure high quality academic advising services. Assist in the selection, onboarding, and continued professional development of University College Academic Advisors. Assist University College administration with developing and implementing proactive retention strategies for at-risk students and implementing general advising best practices. Assist the Associate Dean with university academic procedures including course withdrawals, academic appeals, major changes, course offering assessments. Assist the Associate Dean and Dean of University College with leading the planning and implementation of initiatives that promote academic success, engagement, and retention among first- and second-year students. Attend and/or lead advising related meetings in the absence of the Associate Dean. Serve on committees and engage in cross-campus collaboration to enhance academic advising services as requested


Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Serve as the primary expert and central resource on advising-related technology platforms and institutional policies, including Banner, Navigate, Degree Works, and other systems critical to academic advising and undergraduate registration. Provide comprehensive support to University College advising staff and affiliated campus partners, ensuring the effective and policy-compliant use of these tools to advance student success.

Design and lead University College advisor training programs that integrate technical proficiency with a deep understanding of university policies, procedures, and academic regulations. Stay current on institutional and system-wide policy updates.

Actively identify gaps, inconsistencies, or inefficiencies in current advising policies and procedures. Leverage on-the-ground insights and expertise to advocate for thoughtful policy enhancements that improve the student and advisor experience across the institution.


Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Provide Academic Advisement to a caseload of NCCU University College students (first year, sophomores and transfer students) through one-on-one meetings, workshops, or presentations regarding majors, degree requirements, academic progress, and selection of courses for future semesters. Assist students in course planning and give appropriate resources/referrals to campus support services.


Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Facilitate the student transition cycle from University College into their respective academic departments, ensuring a seamless and informed handoff that supports timely degree progression.

Jointly oversee the planning and execution of University College advising-led engagement events that promote academic progression and student belonging, while also serving as the advising representative for broader campus programs such as orientation, welcome week, and other student success initiatives. Collaborate with campus partners to ensure advising maintains a visible and supportive role in both advising-specific and institution-wide events that enhance the first-year and second year student experience.
