Overview:

We are seeking a Superconducting Magnet R&D Staff who will focus on developing and leading superconducting magnet testing and development as it pertains to fusion and other high field enabled environments and applications. The successful candidate will be working with a new University of Tennessee-Oak Ridge Innovation Institute (UTORII) project developing materials for extreme applications with a focus on fusion environments. This work will be focused on developing new capabilities for testing materials response to coupled extreme environment where high temperature, irradiation, plasma erosion, magnetic field, or combinations thereof are present. As part of UT-ORII, the candidate will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with a team of University of Tennessee faculty, postdoctoral associates, and students in the Nuclear Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and Physics Departments, as well as scientists at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

This position resides in the Fusion Technology Group of the Fusion Nuclear Science and Technology Section of the Fusion Energy Directorate (FED) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Support developing and performing complex research and engineering projects related to superconducting magnets, associated cryogenic materials and systems, and fusion hardware.
  • Analyze complex systems involving cryogenic temperatures, electromagnetic stress, and magnetic fields to develop unique solutions to integrated problems.
  • Communicate results of analyses and experiments through presentations, reports, conference papers, and peer-reviewed journals.
  • Work and lead multi-disciplinary projects with private and public partners across industrial, university, and research organizations.
  • Deliver ORNL's mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote equal opportunity by fostering a respectful workplace - in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in electrical, material science, or mechanical engineering or a related discipline with four years of related experience, or a MS degree in these areas with at least seven years of related experience.
  • Experience with designing, building, and operating superconducting materials and magnets and relevant cryogenic refrigeration system and hardware.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with solid modeling and finite element analysis codes as it relates to electromagnetic interactions of coil assemblies, the modeling of cryogenic/superconducting properties, and/or thermodynamic/heat transfer analysis in cryogenic environments is preferred.
  • Prior experience in magnet design, procurement, and fabrication in high field environments with high temperature superconducting materials is highly desirable.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

Security, Credentialing, and Eligibility Requirements:

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.
  • For employment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a Real ID compliant form of identification will be required.
  • Additionally, ORNL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions. All employees must also be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card as mandated by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, which requires a favorable post-employment background investigation.
  • To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.

For foreign national candidates:

  • If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO) risk determination to maintain employment.
  • Once you meet the three-year residency requirement, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment.
