DH NONINVASIVE LAB PAV L Job Summary

Under general supervision, performs quality cardiac ultrasound examinations using non-invasive cardiovascular technology equipment to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with heart and blood vessel conditions. Uses cognitive sonographer skills to identify, record, and adapt procedures as appropriate to anatomical, pathological, diagnostic information and images. Analyzes sonograms, synthesizes sonography information and medical history, and communicates findings to the appropriate physician. Practices sound safety and infection control practices according to agency policies and procedures; identifies safety and infection control issues. Performs quality control on appropriate systems and equipment. Provides a safe environment for all patients, assuring proper patient positioning and patient care throughout the patient stay. Promotes quality care by redefining priorities for care based on evaluation of patient/family response or changing condition. Assumes accountability for achieving goals set jointly with the lead sonographer/manager for the next evaluation period.

Essential Functions:
  • Perform transthoracic echocardiograms (TTE's) (75%)
  • Perform transesophageal echocardiograms (TEE's) (10%)
  • Perform exercise or dobutamine stress echocardiograms (ESE/DSE) (10%)
  • Perform emergent echos or scheduled procedures (Invasive lab echos or Watchman/PFO procedures) (5%)

Education:
  • Post High School Diploma or Certificate Program Completion of two year hospital or college Non-Invasive Sonography program accredited by the American Medical Association. Required

Work Experience:
  • 1-3 years Direct patient care preferred as a cardiac sonographer in a hospital setting

Licenses:
  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association or American Red Cross Required and
  • RDMS-Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer - ARDMS - American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography Required or
  • CCT-Certified Cardiographic Technician - CCI - Cardiovascular Credentialing International Required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge: Understanding cardiac anatomy and physiology with the ability to position and monitor patients and obtain appropriate images.
  • Knowledge: Performing advanced echocardiographic imaging procedures and techniques such as real-time 3D, contrast perfusion, automated border detection, acoustic densitometry, train and strain rate.
  • Knowledge: Using cardiac ultrasound equipment as well as ability to reasonably troubleshoot all necessary equipment and ensure notification of appropriate personnel when problems occur.
  • Skill: Interpreting and applying written guidelines, precedents, and work practices to standardized work situations and specific cases.
  • Skill: Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other employees, organizations and the public.

  • Skill: Recognizing non-standardized situations and preparing recommendations for problem resolutions.
  • Skill: Using practices and principles of effective and persuasive communications.
  • Skill: Ensuring the integrity of data for clinical elements, demographics, billing information for physician reports.
  • Ability: Use various computer and patient charting programs; Move moderately heavy equipment and assist in repositioning patients; Observe details at close range; Ascend/descend hospital staircase; Maintain stationary position as well as kneel or squat when necessary
