Job Summary

The General Tradesperson constructs, erects, installs, repairs, and finishes structures and furnishings using skills in carpentry, masonry, cement finishing, and painting. The General Tradesperson's primary area of expertise is general trades (i.e., carpentry, roofing, concrete, painting, masonry and flooring). This position is considered essential, and the jobholder will be required to respond to emergencies as needed throughout the Department of Public Works when directed.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

GENERAL TRADESPERSON I
$23.53 - $25.88 per hour

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

*Uses hand tools such as hammers, screw drivers, hand saws, etc. and other materials at job site as needed.
*Operates power tools such as, but not limited to saws, drills, chainsaws, pneumatic tools etc.
*Assists in the maintenance and repair existing city structures and facilities.
*Assists in the construction of new structures and facilities.
*Performs labor duties as required for completion of tasks assigned.
*Performs all other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
*High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES AND/OR LICENSES:
*Vehicle Operator's license with satisfactory driving record that meets insurability standards of the City's insurance carrier is required. The employee must maintain the license for the duration of their employment.
*Non-CDL DOT medical certification or the ability to obtain prior to employment.
*Maryland Approved Flagger Program Card or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment.

REQUIRED SKILLS (Communication/Language; Mathematical; Computer; etc.):
*Some knowledge of construction materials, general carpentry, construction tools and equipment.
*Basic knowledge of one of the designated trades and associated materials, tools and equipment.
*Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
*Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
*Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
*Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

OTHER DESIRABLES:
*Class A or B CDL license.
*Ability to process written/electronic Work Request as a means of receiving, completing, and documenting work performed.
*Ability to instruct primary trade skills to others with a different trade.
*Ample knowledge of the operation and care of equipment, tools, and supplies related to the maintenance, renovation, and repair of facilities, and of work hazards and precautionary measures.
*Capable of properly erecting scaffolding and ladders.
*Ability to coordinate and perform workspace relocations.

GENERAL TRADESPERSON II
$25.30 - $27.83 per hour

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

*Performs all essential duties and responsibilities listed under the General Tradesperson I.
*Utilizes computers, hand-held data devices and other technology to send and receive work assignment information.
*Answers phone, radio and/or communicates information to vendors, city departments/personnel and the general public.
*Uses knowledge of primary trade and/or other department trades, materials, tools and equipment to complete assigned tasks.
*Participates in the maintenance and repair of existing city structures and facilities.
*Participated in the construction of new structures and facilities.
*Performs other duties as assigned.

*Knowledge of one of the designated trades and associated materials, tools and equipment.
*Some knowledge of masonry.
*Some knowledge of construction materials, general carpentry, construction tools and equipment.
*Some knowledge of concrete materials and basic forming and finishing experience.
*Some knowledge of demolition and removal obsolete structures.
*Some knowledge of general painting materials and techniques.
*Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
*Ability to write simple correspondence.
*Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
*Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
*Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
*Ability to deal with problems involving variables in standardized situations.
*Ability to climb ladders and extension ladders up to forty.

OTHER DESIRABLES:
*Class A or B CDL license.
*Ability to process written/electronic Work Request as a means of receiving, completing, and documenting work performed.
*Ability to instruct primary trade skills to others with a different trade.
*Thorough knowledge of the operation and care of equipment, tools, and supplies related to the maintenance, renovation, and repair of facilities, and of work hazards and precautionary measures.
*Ability to properly erect scaffolding and ladders.
*Ability to coordinate and perform workspace relocations.

GENERAL TRADESPERSON III
$27.20 - $29.92 per hour

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

*Performs all duties listed under General Tradesperson I and II.
*Responds to phone calls, radio calls.
*Communicates with vendors, city personnel, city departments and the general public.
*Uses knowledge of construction materials and processes to efficiently produce structures and furnishings from construction designs and specifications.
*Provides complete carpentry installation and repair, including: roofing, frame carpentry, finish carpentry, cabinetry, drywall, flooring, suspended ceilings, locksmithing, concrete forms, and miscellaneous wood fabrication. Tasks could include demolition of old structures, site excavation, subgrade preparation, work layout, material selection, coordination with material suppliers, material preparation, and cleanup.
*Set up of safe work zones for construction and/or maintenance jobs.
*Uses knowledge of finish materials and processes to efficiently apply durable and aesthetic finishes.
*Provides complete finish installation, including surface preparation; hole/crack filling, selection of premixed paints, mixing required portions of pigment and additives to prepare paint that matches specified colors, producing simulated textures and patterns, and cleanup. Uses knowledge of at least two of the primary trades and/or additional department trades, materials, tools and equipment to complete assignments.
*Performs other duties as assigned.

*Ability to use finish application using multiple methods, including brush, roller, and sprayer.
*Ability to repair and replace existing structures, fixtures, and furnishings.
*Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
*Ability to repair and replace existing finishes.
*Ability to write effective correspondence.
*Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

GENERAL TRADESPERSON IV
$29.24 - $32.16 per hour

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
*Performs all essential duties and responsibilities listed under General Tradesperson I, II and III.
*Responds to phone calls, radio calls.
*Communicates with vendors, city personnel, city departments and the general public.
*Uses knowledge of construction materials and processes to efficiently produce structures from construction designs and specifications.
*Uses knowledge of construction materials and processes to efficiently produce structures and furnishings from construction designs and specifications.
*Provides complete carpentry installation and repair, including roofing, frame carpentry, finish carpentry, cabinetry, drywall, flooring, suspended ceilings, locksmithing, concrete forms, and miscellaneous wood fabrication. Tasks could include demolition of old structures, site excavation, subgrade preparation, work layout, material selection, coordination with material suppliers, material preparation, and cleanup.
*Provides complete concrete installation, replacement, and finishing, including demolition of old concrete, site excavation, subgrade preparation, work layout, material selection, coordination with material suppliers, material mixing, construction of forms, wire or bar configuration and installation, leveling of concrete to specified depth and workable consistency with screed and float, smooths and shapes surfaces, proper use of additives and cleanup.
*Set up of safe work zones for construction and/or maintenance jobs.
*Uses knowledge of finish materials and processes to efficiently apply durable and aesthetic finishes.
*Oversees daily operations in the absence of the Department Supervisor.
*Performs other duties as assigned.

*Five (5) years of related experience and/or training in the General Trades.
*Two (2) of the five (5) years of experience accurately and efficiently completing projects in their specialized trades to high quality standards.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES AND/OR LICENSES:
*Vehicle Operator's license with satisfactory driving record that meets insurability standards of the City's insurance carrier is required. The employee must maintain the license for the duration of their employment.
*Non-CDL DOT medical certification or the ability to obtain prior to employment.
*Maryland Approved Flagger Program Card.

REQUIRED SKILLS (Communication/Language; Mathematical; Computer; etc.):
*Knowledge in the following building trades (Masonry, Cement Finishing, Painting).
*Thorough knowledge of the carpentry trade to include methods, techniques and tools used in that trade.
*Knowledge of multiple masonry materials, including brick, block, and stone.
*Thorough understanding of construction drawings or blueprints and applying to a project.
*Ability to efficiently complete projects in specialized trade to high quality standards.
*Ability to repair and replace existing structures, fixtures, and furnishings.
*Ability to repair and replace existing finishes.
*Ability of using finish application using multiple methods, including brush, roller, and sprayer.
*Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
*Ability to write simple correspondence.
*Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
*Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
*Ability to climb ladders and extension ladders up to 40 feet.
*Ability to process written/electronic work orders as means of receiving, completing and documenting work performed.
*Ability to determine to instruct primary trade/skills to others with a different trade or Tech level.
*Ability to determine material quantities from drawings, blueprints or existing structures.
*Ability to operate a backhoe and or front-end loader with precision and safety.
*Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
*Ability to work with little or no supervision.
