THE ROLE

As Director, AI for Science and Innovation - External Partnerships & Public Policy, you will lead AMD's strategic engagement in AI-driven scientific discovery. This includes advancing our alignment with the U.S. White House AI Action Plan and engaging with global public initiatives such as national AI Factories and sovereign AI infrastructure programs.

You will build trusted relationships with U.S. federal agencies, national laboratories, academic institutions, and industry partners to accelerate the use of AMD technologies-GPUs, CPUs, and open-source software-in enabling scalable, cutting-edge research in science, energy, and national security. This highly visible role ensures AMD remains central to the future of sovereign and open AI ecosystems.

THE PERSON

The ideal candidate is a strategic, relationship-driven leader with a strong understanding of artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, and their application in scientific research and engineering. They are adept at navigating complex public-private ecosystems and bring a deep appreciation for the role of technology in national and global scientific advancement. With a collaborative mindset and strong executive presence, they excel at forging high-impact partnerships across government, academia, and industry. This individual is skilled at aligning organizational capabilities with emerging public policy and research priorities, and is comfortable representing the company in high-stakes policy discussions, technical forums, and global initiatives. They thrive in cross-functional environments, leading with clarity, fostering innovation, and delivering measurable results in mission-driven programs at scale.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as AMD's principal representative for AI for Science and Innovation collaborations across public and private sectors
  • Enable AI-driven advancements in domains such as energy, materials science, healthcare, robotics, and manufacturing
  • Develop executive briefings and policy recommendations tailored to strategic government and research partners
  • Oversee governance, operations, and performance tracking for AMD's AI for Science and Innovation programs
  • Ensure cross-organizational alignment with public-sector R&D and national science initiatives
  • Collaborate on messaging strategies with Legal, Government Relations, and Communications teams
  • Foster a culture that promotes innovation, inclusion, transparency, and collaboration

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  • Strong background in public sector engagement, science and technology policy, or strategic partnerships
  • Deep understanding of AI technologies, high-performance computing (HPC), and scientific computing workflows
  • Proven ability to lead across complex, matrixed organizations and to influence senior stakeholders
  • Experience working at the intersection of advanced technologies and mission-driven scientific research
  • Exceptional communication, stakeholder engagement, and executive presence.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage ambiguity, prioritize impact, and deliver outcomes at scale

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS

  • PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, or a related technical or scientific field
  • A track record of leadership in AI, HPC, or science and technology policy

LOCATION

Washington, D.C. or Austin, TX (with frequent travel to Washington, D.C.)
