Zoetis is currently looking for an Instrumentation and Controls Journeyman/Technician to join our team in Kalamazoo, MI. The Instrumentation and Controls Journeyman/Technician is a key member of the Facilities Maintenance Team, which consists of certified technicians from various trades who collectively support and maintain a large, complex R&D facility. The ideal candidate will be adept at troubleshooting and performing diagnostics to understand the scope and interdependencies of equipment failures and other reported issues. Responsibilities may include training apprentices and coordinating the efforts of other team members and/or contractors on complex tasks. This role involves routine exposure to hazardous materials, heights, temperature extremes, moving equipment, confined spaces, and dusty or dirty conditions. The candidate must be willing to work variable or non-standard shifts and be available for 24-hour on-call support as per pre-determined schedules. The role requires direct interaction with facility users to ensure that supported systems meet operational requirements and compliance standards.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, modification, testing, programing, and installation of equipment and components, including various Programmable Logic controllers (PLC's) and Distributive Control Systems (DCS).
  • Use test equipment (e.g. multi-meters, electronic bridges, loop calibrators) and hand tools (e.g. drills, screwdrivers) as necessary to troubleshoot and maintain devices and systems for the facility.
  • Provide training and oversight on assigned systems and procedures. This may include training apprentices and coordinating the efforts of other team members and/or contractors on complex tasks.
  • Serve as a technical advisor in areas such as process design, material/parts/equipment selection, equipment testing, technical problem-solving, and maintenance plan management. Report job status updates and other relevant information to customer operations leads and other stakeholders.
  • Complete and submit equipment maintenance and calibration records promptly.
  • Respond to after-hour maintenance emergencies and provide 24-hour on-call support.
  • Participate in strategic planning activities, facility engineering design reviews, process improvement projects, budget planning, project spend tracking, managing vendor engagements, and assist with staff recruitment and interviewing activities.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Education and Experience:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 8 years of experience as an Instrumentation and Controls Journeyman/Technician in an industrial setting, plus a Department of Labor Journeyman certification
    OR
  • Associate degree in instrumentation, engineering, or a related technical discipline and minimum of 5 years of experience as an Instrumentation and Controls Journeyman/Technician in an industrial setting
    OR
  • 4 years of military experience in electronics repair and calibration (may be substituted for formal training) and a minimum of 5 years of experience as an Instrumentation and Controls Journeyman/Technician in an industrial setting.
  • Ability to work in various environmental conditions, including heights, temperature extremes, moving equipment, confined spaces, hazardous materials, and dusty or dirty conditions. Must adhere to the use of appropriate personal protective equipment and follow all safety policies for each job performed.
  • Must be able to lift heavy objects, climb/descend ladders, and stand/kneel for long periods.
  • Valid Driver's License

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of Preventive/Predictive Maintenance programs and industry practices and standards.
  • Strong time management skills and proven effectiveness in managing and prioritizing work in high workload situations.
  • Demonstrated good decision-making ability and composure in everyday situations and during emergencies or time-sensitive situations.
  • Previous maintenance experience within an animal research facility, drug manufacturing facility, or other regulated environment is highly desired
