As an Operations Technology Mechanical Engineer at Cleveland-Cliffs New Carlisle Works, you will be an integral part of the autonomous work teams that make up the New Carlisle Works production and maintenance organizations. The individual at this level is a seasoned equipment technology professional who demonstrates a broad grasp of the technical and administrative aspects of equipment technology and maintenance engineering techniques and principles. Projects assigned are complex, involve multiple variables, and can be cross functional. Individuals in this role prepare effective communications across the organization and aid in problem resolution specific to assigned programs/projects.

The New Carlisle Works facility is in New Carlisle, Indiana. We produce cold-rolled, hot-dipped galvanized and galvannealed, and electrogalvanized steel coils.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Adhere to prescribed safety rules and policies, leading by example.
  • Manage technical aspects of assigned equipment projects. Seek methods or procedures that safely improve maintenance practices which improve equipment performance and reduce costs. Demonstrate proficiency with a wide range of concepts, practices, and principles of professional maintenance.
  • Work with teams to improve the overall manufacturing process through effective daily management. Drive improvement in both inspection and time-based maintenance practices. Improve both maintenance standards and procedures to improve both safety and equipment performance. Work to improve methods in maintenance outage planning to improve outage efficiency and lower cost. Develop practice that lowers costs and improves machine reliability.
  • Complete project responsibilities for design, specification, review and development of equipment or systems. Will be involved with making engineering/maintenance studies, detail design, procurement, installation, acceptance testing and performance audits.
  • Assist in the development of schedules and priorities within work teams to assure completion of projects according to contract specifications and commitments. Maintain effective communication of projects with everyone impacted by the project.
  • Perform detailed technical calculations pertaining to equipment and meet with appropriate team members to resolve any questions or issues as needed.
  • Prepare and participate in presentations as required, to explain improved maintenance practices, design changes to equipment and systems. Write reports and document ideas and concepts for presentations using various software packages.
  • Investigate incident and equipment failure: communicate results and corrective actions.
  • Assist in guiding and developing critical repair procedures and determine recommended replacement schedule of equipment to avoid end-of-life failure between equipment turnarounds.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree (B.S.) in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, from four-year college or university is required, with at least two years of work-related experience
  • Ability to effectively communicate across all levels or the organization
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, advanced Excel skills and Power Point)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Manufacturing industry experience with knowledge of OSHA safety requirements
  • Experience in operations, maintenance or technology in manufacturing
