Overview

ABOUT THE POSITION

Managing Director | Metro DC

VHB is seeking a growth-oriented, entrepreneurial, and experienced operations leader to serve as the Managing Director of our 100+ person Metro DC operation, with offices located in Tysons, VA and Washington DC. The successful candidate must have extensive leadership and business development experience; broad knowledge of the delivery of integrated engineering, transportation, planning, and environmental services to public- and private-sector clients; and a demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and manage employees in partnership with a strong leadership team.

The successful candidate must also be able to lead the development and implementation of the office's growth strategy, drive strategic initiatives in collaboration with regional and corporate leadership, and oversee complex projects. Market and client experience throughout DC, Maryland, and northern Virginia is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

    Establish the office's annual business plan and oversee the achievement of business and financial goals
  • Coordinate business development efforts to identify and pursue opportunities in multiple markets for public and private sector clients
  • Lead, empower, and partner with the office leadership team to set vision, delegate responsibilities, and achieve the strategic initiatives for the office
  • Conduct office leadership meetings and office-wide employee meetings
  • Oversee project performance and ensure accountability across teams
  • Review and sign contracts identifying and mitigating risks
  • Foster collaboration across disciplines, leveraging leadership teams to effectively manage diverse groups and project teams
  • Participate in local market business community activities to further the prominence of VHB
  • Develop and grow VHB employees, acting as a mentor at all levels
  • Lead go/no go and partnering decisions on strategic pursuits
  • Oversee relationships with key clients and manage important project assignments
  • Manage external visibility efforts
  • Stay connected with regional and corporate leadership through in-person attendance at regular meetings across the Mid-Atlantic region and VHB footprint
  • Serve as a VHB ambassador, promoting VHB's success and seeking innovative ways to lead industry

Skills and Attributes

  • Strong business acumen, including proven ability to develop strategic plans and business plans and execute them
  • Proven ability to lead, delegate, and oversee a leadership team of industry professionals
  • Proven ability to generate new business
  • Knowledgeable in a broad range of engineering, transportation, energy, planning and environmental topics, spanning both the public and private sectors
  • Ability to think and act strategically in developing business and pursuing client targets
  • Exceptional collaboration skills, with the ability to build consensus, foster cross-functional teamwork, and align groups toward shared goals
  • Demonstrated success in mentoring employees and successfully managing complex, multi-disciplinary projects
  • Highly motivated self-starter
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

Qualifications

  • 15+ years of relevant professional experience in a multi-disciplinary engineering consulting firm, including significant management experience, required
  • 5 years of DC, Maryland and northern Virginia experience in a leadership capacity within the AEC industry preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Planning, Environmental Services, or a related field required
  • Professional licensure, i.e. PE, PG, AICP preferred

Hiring Salary Range - $200,000 - $240,000. However, the final agreed-upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, and experience. In addition, VHB offers a holistic benefits package which can be found here.
